Loch Lomond 18th
« on: July 16, 2007, 10:05:34 PM »
I haven't been in a few years, but I have always been a big fan of Weiskopf's Loch Lomond. Why they needed a parkland course in that neighborhood, I have no idea, but anyway...

What's with that overgrown tree on the left of the 18th hole.  Does it make any sense to have water left, and if you challenge it, successfully...you end up blocked by at tree?

That is certainly a testing tee shot on Loch Lomond's #18--a test that Mickelson failed twice on Sunday.

Watching the coverage, I couldn't help but ask myself--what would a different architect have done with the property there?  Weiskopf's course seems good enough (it's certainly popular with the pros), but it does seem a bit forced--a traditional American parkland course in that setting.

What could an architect with more minimialist tendencies have created?  Could the architect have borrowed more from classic, inland courses in the UK (e.g., Gleneagles or heathland courses)?  I understand the land there is quite soft so maybe a straightforward, parkland design is best.  Any thoughts?

Doug Carrick, a Canadian GCA, has just finished building a course (that is now open) on Loch Lomond at the DeVere Cameron House Hotel. It does have a more "Scottish" look.

I know there are are plans to build a 2nd course at the Loch Lomond club. I think Nicklaus will be the GCA of record. I don't know the status of the project.

I played the Carrick course a month or so ago.  I'm not sure it has a particularly Scottish look or feel but it will be a very good course when it has settled down and grown in a bit better.  I'm not sure the opening three holes are particularly remarkable but there are some very good holes as the round progresses.
In July I will be riding two stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity, including Mont Ventoux for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Why did they change the tee position on 18 ?

I remember it on the left of the tree , now its on the right .
