How much is too much?

Last week, Ian Andrew started a rather interesting thread regarding the relocation of a tee box on a old Thompson golf course. One of the setbacks was the inability to grow healthy turf in the location and the overall difficulty of growing turf on the site in the first place.

Why aren't the natural limitations of a site more noted in terms as to whether or not a golf course is suited for the site?

I think there is a point where the effort to build a golf course exceeds benefit of having a golf course on the site, no matter how much the non-turf issues are conducive to good, sound golf.

How much is too much?

Is it bad practice to put trees to the south of a Tee or Green espessialy in acountry like Ireland, because I see it all the time?

Growth problems can be due to a number of problems. Trees are a problem if they cause to much shadow but it is not always so. If the sward receives morning sun and shade in the afternoon this is less of a problem as the reverse. If however the trees drop on to the sward (water droplets) this causes big problems for grass establishment as does lack of air movement, poor soils and many other things. You need to look at every site individually.
