We had our get together last night at the wonderful Fox Chapel Golf Club, and it underscored one of my favorite things about this site: the opportunity to fraternize with some really interesting, thoughtful, and entertaining people who are passionate about golf and golf course architecture.

Thank you very much to Don Wolff and David Gookin, who hosted us and shared their passion for their terrific course. And thanks to everyone else who came and joined in.

Now go meet up with some fellow posters, and have fun!

George -

I echo your sentiments. I have had the pleasure of hosting quite a few posters and have traveled to see a few as well. I have not been disappointed. I look forward to meeting a few more this summer. It is nice to talk to people that share your passion.

George,

Then why did you turn down my offer of riding a sand pro at Wolf Point Sleep Away Golf Construction CampTM?  :)

Is it because we've already met several times and are already friends?

Happy Father's Day enjoy Oakmont

Mike, if my wife would allow it, my son and I would already be on your work crew!

Happy Father's Day to you as well.

Enjoy Oakmont is redundant.

It was really terrific having such a fine dinner and lecture with such intelligent, observant and passionate fellows.  Thanks for a great time and hope to play with you soon!

George I wholeheartedly agree.
In Europe we are told there are six continents.  When I meet a GCA member from Antartica I will have completed the set and I've yet to meet a wrong un'.

It has been all good when meeting fellow GCA'ers. We should all meet as many of the treehouse as possible.

George,
It is absolutely one of the best things about this site. Meeting golfers with similar passions just makes the whole experience that much better. Having recently returned from NZ/Australia I can tell you there are a bunch of great GCA guys down there too.

I'll add my agreement with this.  So far (I am a newbie, after all), I've only had the opportunity to play in one Dixie Cup and see a couple of other members at my club, but it's all been really great.

I look forward to more, and anyone in the Midlands South Carolina area, let me know.

Well, I remember the first gca member I ever met.
It was when I forgot to show up to caddy and ended up not shutting up for hours.
 ;) :o

Since, I have probably met 25 other gca'ers, and have loved meeting them all!
It's fun to be with people passionate about the same thing.
Plus, its always nice to have somebody to play a fun round of golf with.
Or, to caddy for, of course.
 :)

GCAers have been incredibly kind to me, hosting me at courses, sharing meals, giving me a bed for the night, and the kindness of a bunch of GCAers who put a roof over my son's head for three months in the States and got him some fabulous golf experiences was stupendous.  If only our political leaders showed an interest in golf course design they might be more preoccupied with the greens at Oakmont than losing dozens of troops' lives daily in Iraq and Afghanistan.

As George says, it is a neat aspect of the GCA site — and we should all take time to send a note to Ran every once in a while. Connections are among the most treasured aspects of global connectivity.

I would like to point out that I may be taller that Jay. Up until this get together I figured most GCA posters in the East were all as tall as Matt Ward. Thankfully this is not the case.

Along the lines of what Dave Schmidt says, I heard a very smart 91 year old lady this morning talking in a more sociology-anthropological sense about the more meaningful, rich and effective experience of being in a smaller committed group with an identity and focus, than just part of the mainstream conventional wisdom sort of group within your society.  (all paraphrased and interpretted from her remarks, not verbatim).

I though of that phenomenon in context with our treehouse.

If as Dave points out, your golf experience is only from the aspect or POV of the gazzilion other golfers, more passionate only to buy the latest equipment, hit the ball further than the other, bought fully into the marketed hype of golf as a trendy social-bizlike activity, only seeking what you are told is great golf by the PR machines, and lifestyle R.E advertisements, etc., you may wind up with the emptiness of the group that is swept along by the currents of the superficial.

Having a small, focused, on-going discussion and place to express yourself with those that understand the passion for the game and fields of play that isn't mainstream, market driven perceptions, is a good thing.  Being able to hook up with similarly motivated folks, around the globe is really a modern day miracle of the internet.

In the old days, could you imagine what Tom Paul would have spent on 26670 cablegrams to tell us what he believes about GCA?   ;D :o

No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

I mentioned this on another thread...it was truly inspiring to meet some of the posters on the site at Fox Chapel and share some great GCA discussion...my thanks to the gentlemen at Fox Chapel for a fascinating presentation on its history.  We are all unique in our own way, though some, like chaps such as Forrest Richardson are definitely one of a kind ;D

Really enjoyed touring Oakmont with you Forrest and getting an additional perspective through the eyes of your mentor Jack Snyder.

Though the trip wouldn't have been nearly as fun without the back and forth sparring with Bill Yates, thanks Bill it was MUCH FUN!
