Experience with Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program?
« on: June 07, 2007, 04:05:15 PM »
Our course is looking at undertaking the process for certification as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program. I would be interested in any insight on this from anyone who has gone through the process.

From preliminary research, it appears this is typically a positive experience for a club. I'm sure there must be some downsides though. Are the restrictions as to course maintenance burdensome other than the initial stages during which maintenance practices may change?

We are a small club on the banks of the James River minutes from downtown Richmond, VA. The course is adjacent to a wetlands area managed by the City of Richmond. Our sense is that by going through the ACSP certification process we can take something of a leadership role environmentally since our course has quite a high visibility here given its proximity to the downtown area.

Thanks for any insight.

It is a postivie experience, and there really aren't any set restrictions. Audubon will work with you and customize a program that fits their requirements. We have gone through the process here at Shennecossett, and I have also been part of certifying another course. Let me know if you have any other questions. It is great pr, and educates people about golf courses, demonstrating that golf courses are not the great polluters that some people make them out to be.
It is what it is.

I played a round w/ the owner of Cypress Ridge GC, Denis Sullivan, about a year ago. He was very involved in the development of his Peter Jacobsen designed course and it's Audubon certification. Although there were many challenges, he's happy he went through the process. Contact me via email if you'd like Mr. Sullivan's phone number or email address.

Currently trying to certify a 36 hole resort.  I believe it will be a positive experience.  It will involve some work how ever the people at audubon will help you through any part.  Remember, most of what the say is a recommendation and not a rule that must be done.  They look at each situation and property and will make a decision from there.  It can only help from a pr stand point and makes people aware of what a golf course can do for the environment.

Certainly positive and definately good PR for you and your Club.  The outreach and education was great, try and get the local school involved in production of name tags for specific plant species, or the creation of a nature trail.

If only it would make a golf course better.

The Resort at Squaw Valley has some sort of Audubon recognition, but such accolade still does not prevent it from being an awful place to play golf.
