Possible 59 (or better) at NCAA Men's Championship
« on: June 01, 2007, 03:52:32 PM »
Right now on the Par 70 Golden Horseshoe course at Williamsburg, VA Michael Schachner of Duke University is eleven under par heading to the Par 5 fifteenth hole. He shot 28 on the front, parred the tenth and then birdied eleven through fourteen to get to -11. We made see history made in an hour or so...

And check the three day scoring trend...what the hell is going to happen tomorrow?    I'll take 89 and you can have 49...

15-18 are all in the ten easiest holes on the course today - the toughest is 18 playing only +.02 over par.

The crazy thing is that the scoring isn't really that low - the individual leaders are only -6.

According to the talking heads on the web-video feed, it took some of the teams a while to figure out not to hit driver on every hole. Apparently the rough (three inches of bluegrass and Bermuda mixsed) is pretty tough and the fairways are very narrow.

I wonder how many drivers Mr. 79-69-59 has hit each day?

Well, the party may be over. He bogeyed the Par 5 fifteenth hole to fall back to -10. Needs to play the last three holes in one under for the magic five-nine.

Mike,

Sorry 'bout that.

By the way, let me know how you play this weekend. I got a feeling you're going to make some putts and take it real low...

We had a local kid shoot 59 in a high school tournament a few years ago...Who cares?  My freshman year in high school the winning score in Sectionals was 61...I think he beat me by 26.

The part about going low was funny.

Mentioning making some putts was pretty mean I'll admit  :P

I would have said it about the guys in our dogfight tomorrow morning but we don't draw teams until fifteen minutes before we tee off and I don't want to jinx my partners.

He damn near holed out his 2nd shot on 18.....has about a 7 footer for birdie to shoot 59.

Clint, was (also) watching the GW.com feed, and the birdie putt that he missed looked like about five full paces from the hole. Still, an astonishing round.

Wrong Duke sport....sorry, couldn't resist.

I followed him at the Fighting Illini Tourney at OFCC this past Fall.....the kid is a great player.

Choke? Yeah, probably.

But the respect he's earned for shooting 60(!) in a national championship far outweighs any asterisk about what could have been.

I would assume his round ties the unofficial record for "Lowest Round in National Championship Competition". Ever. If my assumption is correct, then that's a big deal.

Quick quiz, I'll post the answer shortly: with whom would he share this record?

Matt,
He tied low round in relation to par at -10. He beat the other player gross 60 vs 62.

How about the kid from Florida who shot 60 (-11) in the U.S. Am last year--Billy Horschel?

Horschel drove it in the water on 18 at Chaska Town Course and still closed with a birdie.

John,

Wasn't that his ninth hole of the day or am I mistaken?

I wonder which 60 was "better"?
