Scarborough South Cliff (MacKenzie)
« on: May 17, 2007, 10:29:18 AM »
Does the South Cliff course at Scarborough (few miles from Ganton) still have much in the way of recognizable MacKenzie features? I can't find more than a brief mention of it in Tom Doak's book on MacKenzie.

Brent

What does Doak say in his book?

The club's site states:
"the newly formed company engaged the services of Dr MacKenzie . He was commissioned to design and supervise the construction of a new course, which is, with some alterations over the years, the one that is played on today."

There is no indication what those changes were or how much of the original course remains today.

I played there a couple of times about ten years ago. My recollection was it was an OK course but nowhere near the same league as nearby Ganton.  If you were after an unaltered MacKenzie course you'd be better off in Leeds (about 60 miles) at Alwoodley.
2014 to date: not actually played anywhere yet!
Still to come: Hollins Hall; Ripon City; Shipley; Perranporth; St Enodoc

Andrew,

The only places I can find it mentioned is in the Appendix as a renovation and IIRC it was mentioned in passing somewhere in the first couple chapters. I need to make a more careful search of the early part of the book since it is not indexed.

[ADDENDUM]
I went back through the "North of England" chapter yesterday and could find no mention of Scarborough South Cliff in the book. It's just an entry in the Appendix as far as I can tell.
