Courses whose best holes come early in the round

I always found it counterintutive that the finest stretch of holes would come first.

Spyglass Hill seems to be the poster-child for courses that "peak early"--that is, their best holes are found in the opening stretch.

What other courses share this characteristic, and how does it affect your evaluation of the course?

Off the top of my head, I think of Royal County Down, which is wonderful throughout but especially at the beginning, as the course starts by the sea and gradually moves inland. In particular, the first 5 holes are excellent, as is the stretch around the turn, but of the last 7 holes only 2 are as inspiring (the 13th and 15th). However, the setting itself is so inspiring that a relatively weak finish (relative to what came before it--they're fine but not great holes) doesn't affect my regard for the course at all--it is still probably my favorite course in the world (right there with Sand Hills and Pine Valley).

With today's stroke play mentality, it does seem counter-intuitive to place the best holes early in the round, but for older courses built when match play was predominant, it would make sense not to save the best for the finishing stretch when many matches would end before these holes would be played.

I have heard that Machrihanish is another course whose best holes come early, but have never played there.

What other courses have their finest stretch of holes early in the round, and how does it affect how those courses are evaluated?

Chris,

I agree about RCD.  I would nominate the Olympic Club Lake Course.  Alot of good holes, but 1-5 might be the best on the course.

I would put Kingsley Club in that category, with the entire front nine (depending on what you think of #9) being as good as anything I have ever seen. Fortunately the back nine doesn't drop off too much, as a matter of fact the back nine can hold its head up with most courses. It's just that the front nine is so incredibly good, that the back nine suffers a little by comparison. #12, 13, 15 and 16 are excellent holes.

What is it that so upsets folk about 14 at Royal County Down?
Is it the caravan/trailer park - or the presence of the conifers planted in a thus-far fruitless effort to disguise it?
Whatever, it's like being cast out of Heaven.
15-18 are all good holes, despite the return to the real world.

Machrihanish is a special case - pure out and back so the 'back' holes are inland, But they're all very good (and linksy) until 17... but, yeah, out is better.

Machrihanish is definitely in there, although the entire front nine holds up pretty well.  At Spyglass, there are the first five, and then there's everything else.

I can't imagine this would happen much in the modern era of design with every course thinking about its magazine ranking ... if there is only one good stretch of land nearly every architect would save it for the end.

Royal Aberdeen, but recent changes to the back have changed this a bit

Probably the best stetch of consecutive holes at RMW are (P4.5) 2nd through 7

2-8 St. Andrews Beach are probably it's best as well.

I agree with Olympic Club.

Crystal Downs front nine is also far superior to the back nine.
IMHO the first 5 holes at Bandon Trails.

Joel,
Interesting choice of holes for BT. I would have picked #13-17. Although #4 is one of my favorite holes there.

Good call on CD. The flow of the front nine is just so interesting. #13 is my favorite hole there.

SFGC's 2nd, third, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th came immediately to mind.

Another RTJ course, Mauna Kea, with its signature 3rd hole.
