Re:Is it fair to judge an architect on how he presents himself?

John,

Its a fair question, but really, I don't know if there is any correlation.

In personality terms, there are great golf champions from the serious (Crenshaw) to the funny (Zoellar and Trevino) and the family men to the womanizers, teetotalers to the drunks, you name it.  Many successful people treat service people terribly, others treat them great.

I don't see why the gca universe can't have the same range.  I don't think that design ability is genetically or mentally tied strongly to any one personality type.  And, if you did a matrix of personal qualities of all gca's through history, you would probably see that they are all over the map, as are champion golfers, which would tend to prove that point.

Obviously, the sum total of someone's traits will determine if any individual client would want to work closely with someone. But not all.  The problem with making quick judgements about someone on one or two things (which, BTW, does happen in the typical interview process) is that the great salesman types might get more jobs based on first impressions.  The quiet, deep thinker won't make as good a first impression, but could be the better choice long run, perhaps because of that very quality.

I have said time and again that the divorce hiring criteria does not apply to architects as they are short term hires anyway.  I did mention this thread to my wife last night and she got surprisingly pissy informing me that the only reason I had never been divorced was because I married her and she put up with me.  I then informed her that if I had married someone else more interesting I would spend more time at home.  She then insulted my family and I responded with a fart on a wooden chair.

End of conversation as she went to her room and I went to mine.

What really got me this morning was that when I asked for an apology for insulting my family she said I started it with the fart.  Her sense of sequence is bizarre.

John,

I hate to generalize, even if every sitcom in America does it for the humor, but your experience is not that unusual.  Women can draw the line of when a fight started at different places than men!  Don't ask how I know that...... :(

I always told my ex that if I were more interesting, I would be in Vegas being more interesting with someone else.....

Tell me, what is the signifigance of farting into a wooden chair (rather than metal, or leather, etc.)?  Had it been the good leather, would you be filed against for divorce as we speak?  When it comes to farts, I will defer to your superior experience.

A wooden chair resonates much louder and wetter.  Sadly, early in our marriage I had a cloth recliner that I often found silent relief (out of courtesy of course) and it soon became the chair than never forgot.

That would depend on the demographic of the potential clientele or if you consider Nicklaus fat.
