What's the story with Erin Hills? I am ill-informed...

Ill-informed about....what?

The course? Whitten's role? Its ranking or lack thereof?

Why it will never be included in the rankings until Ron Whitten is no longer employed by GD...

I wonder what Mr. Law Enforcement may say about this list, given that it includes two in his neighborhood and NOT a certain well-discussed "links" near a big lake.

WISCONSIN
1. Whistling Straits (Straits), Haven
2. Milwaukee C.C., River Hills
3. Blackwolf Run (River), Kohler
4. Whistling Straits (Irish), Haven
5. Blue Mound C.C., Wauwatosa
6. Sentry World, Stevens Point
7. Oneida G. & C.C., Green Bay
8. The Bull at Pinehurst Farms, Sheboygan Falls
9. Minocqua C.C., Minocqua
10. Green Bay C.C., Green Bay

Huck,

I didn't mean that to be a zinger as I know for a fact that there are several great courses that want Digest guys to come out and could care less if GolfWeek showed up anymore than the local blogger.

Here we go again.  Even as a panelist I generally shake my head about the state rankings.  I wonder if the state rankings were just left up to those who live in the state or have played most of the courses in the state, would the results be different?  I don't know for certain.  But I do know that my home state's (Maryland) rankings would be different if the six other MD raters I know had more input.  I don't know many MD players or raters that would have Swan Point better than Bethesda, Chevy Chase, or Woodmont.
Maybe I am wrong, I generally am, but I would like to see the rating numbers of the folks who live in each state and see how they might differ from the published rankings.

The Lake of Isles courses above CC of Fairfield, Yale in Connecticut.. I'm still laughing.. The property is very tough for golf at Lake of Isles and also the greens are the FLATTEST I've ever seen on a Rees design.  I can think of many other public courses in Connecticut I'd rather play than Foxwoods' tandem-- Oxford Greens, Wintonbury, heck even Sterling Farms!

And Tommy, I feel your pain, of course.

Did I mention that these are three different courses, all of which are superior to Rolling Green, and two of which are superior to Lancaster, Stonewall, and Philly Country Club.

Lookie there;

Iron Mountain, MI has a course in Top 25, but not Marquette. Yet each time I ask about Michigan publics here, Timberstone is left out. Well; maybe GD knows nothing ...... or maybe, just maybe, an 'in favor' course resents a bit of competition from an unworthy 'mountain, lake, and forest' type?

Or maybe (and in fact, actually), not enough raters have yet made the trip to Greywalls for it to officially qualify for either their Top 100 or state rankings...

Ditto Golfweek and GOLF Magazine - Greywalls just needs to get more raters to get on these lists, and it's only a matter of time until they do.  From what I'm hearing, once the quota is reached, the average ratings indicate it'll make all the lists.

Just a guess, but the folks who run and edit GD might say, Whitten helped design Erin Hills, so it's not "fair" to include it in the mag's rankings re. conflict of interest, appearance of, blah blah.....

Let me understand something about ratings - Let's say a course scored very high 10 years ago and gets very little play. Does it maintain that high standing or is it required that it have additional, more contemporary reviews in order to sustain its high ranking.  I'm thinking about Swan Point in Maryland. When it opened, the number of quality public courses in Maryland was very limited and it sort of took things by storm.  It is also very much out of the way and a pain to get to.  If raters don't bother to get down there and rate it, it is going to keep that high rating.  Am I correct?

Jerry,
To an extent that certainly is true. I think 10 years might be the cutoff to when old ratings expire, but I'm not positive.

Tom,

The next time you come to PA, I'm going to personally line up a week of golf for you that bypasses all that old nostalgic crap and instead gets you on Huntsville, Lookaway, Glenmaura National, Olde Stonewall, and then we can skip over to NJ for a round at The Ridge At Back Brook.

You can thank me later.  ;)

Very generous of you.  In return, when you come to CA, we'll bypass all the tired old courses you can't access anyway and stick to Stone Eagle, the one course you would like in our state.  Oh wait a second, you can't get on that either most likely.  Never mind.  Don't bother coming to CA, there's nothing here for you.

Mike,

Who gets the last laugh on these anti-ranking trips you love to take?  The members or owners of the courses, the editors of Golfweek, your fellow rankers who have an open mind and not a vendetta agenda...Be sure and let me know before you go and I will email the clubs of your intentions.  Your power trips while entertaining to you really do hurt some good and hard working people who take pride in what they have done...I don't see the fun in it considering the time and effort it would take for such a small pay off.

My heavens, John...

How is this any different than a movie critic offering their honest negative assessment of the latest $70 million blockbuster that fails to meet artistic and entertainment standards?

How is this any different than any other old Internet discussion group commenting franky about whatever topic floats their collective boat, whether that's movies, music, television shows, books, or whatever.

You make it seem that for some reason a club or architect who have hundreds of God's Green Acres and millions of dollars at their disposal to create some individual expression for supposed collective enjoyment and competition should somehow be immune from honest discussion and criticism, or even parody or satire.

Humor often makes a valid point in a much more instructive way than belabored detailed writing.   I guess I should be happy that you at least find it entertaining, even if you feign being appalled at my supposed tastelessness and audacity in daring to speak freely.

I sincerely belive the middle picture course is in the Top 30 in the state of PA. I think it debuted at 25, no - that seemed about right. Not where it is now.
