When beauty distracts..
« on: January 17, 2007, 09:45:09 PM »
In my Cypress Point book, I read that on #13, the traps to the right of the green were VERY deep.
Just yesterday, I heard from another GCA'er who found peril in the LEFT greenside bunker (he is a pro too).

Thus, the traps definitely punish a bad shot, and as they well should.
They are, after all hazards.

Yet, when I look at the 13th hole from the fairway, where shots are approached from, I get very distracted from the depth of the bunkers.  Instead of worrying about where to miss the ball, I can easily see how a golfer would be looking more at how nicely the bunkers fit into the hillside, and how awesome the Pacific Ocean looks.
The vista seems to provide a strategic challenge, at least of some sorts.
Instead of focusing on the shot and where to hit it (did I mention the green was built as the most severe on the course?), the mindset changes to the surrounding view.

What are other good examples of a hole which uses a vista, or a great view to distract the player from executing his shot?

Can a good view on a hole be considered as a legitimate strategic challenge?

And, if a view can provide a good strategic challenge for the shot, does that provide the reason that courses on the ocean tend to be some of the more talked about and great courses (such as PD, Pebble, CPC, NGLA (especially #17),  Turnberry, etc)?

After a healthy hike up to 14 at Bandon Trails, there's time to collect the big sea air and ponder the vastness. Then, off to the left, the 14th green does look rather Lilliputian in scale.  It's a spot we really don't want to leave, (huff, huff) but, we grab a club and get along with it and tempt fate and tease gods to our own damnation.

Jordan,

Number 4 at Bandon Dunes had that sense for me. As I walked up to the green my upcoming putt was far from my thoughts. The setting begs you to stare to the south at 12 and 15. Then you look over the edge to the beach below. Then you look north to 5 - and say, "Wow!"  ...Now you finally realize that you need to putt and try to make par in this tremendous setting.

Conversely, 17 tee at Bandon is filled with awe and sadness.  The awe of the surroundings filled with the sadness that this will be your last viewing of the ocean during the round.

#15 at Cape Breton comes to mind as a hole that can distract the golfer.

One is either focused in on the task at hand, or they are not.

My high school German teacher use to write on the blackboard. As she did, the area below her bodice would shake and shake. It was definitely distracting.

Other good examples?

Probably the greatest example in the world of golf is only three holes on.  ;)

I have found that beauty enhances the golf experience, but without a doubt, a beautiful woman may enhance your ego early on, but just like a hurricane, she will take your house so fast you won't know what hit you.

Moral of this story: Stick with golf ;D
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

What a great picture!

Is the water just right of the flag used on the course?
It does not seem to be part of the bay.

That view could definitely be distracting to the shot!

Craig,

I agree that a great view enhances the experience..
Never said it didnt

I believe Jordan is saying beauty distracts, but doesn't necessarily detract.

Which I'd agree with.

Are there some here for whom beauty detracts from the shot to be played?

Paging Patrick Mucci... although he'd never admit it... he'd say it neither distracts nor detracts.

Have heard that said about the shot to 13 green at LACC (North), but not sure "detract" was the actual word used...

Are you in English Jordan?

As in American and speaking English or actually from England?

I was born in Seattle, WA, where I have lived my whole life.

Though, I can only imagine the views from courses in Ireland...

Eric;

Do they keep that moon hanging there? It certainly is a feature that attracts the eye.

The par-3 #15 at Dale Hollow Lake is a stunner that could certainly distract, because this one is tough. Besides a nasty bunker or two, and an exciting green, you really better choose a good club, because you are dead both short and long. Yet who cares? Look at that!

Sorry, I still haven't mastered posting pix, or I would show you.

Wow, I dont know if they view is exactly my favorite, but it certainly is very distracting.

The green looks like it has a big tilt from the back.
How deep are the bunkers?
