Perhaps some of you haven't seen this yet. Curious how he "regarded the trees with contempt" already in 1892.

It's like reading about a two year old Picasso with finger paint.  ;)

It's also something to see the names of these old American aristocrat families come up again and again throughout the generations in American and its golf. Chatfield-Taylor, that family has been around forever. Another of that early era of Macdonald and Chicago Golf is the name Wilmerding. One is the secretary of my club today and his father is the just retired long term Green Chairman of Fishers Island.

Ulrich:  That really interesting story appears in a chapter of  
 a book called
          GOLF
A turn-of-the-Century Treasury

  published by Castle in 1986

.......  and the article was written by the man who was actually there at the time

Wonderful stuff. It's like reading a mini Max Behr  (what the hell does Gut mean?)

I'm curious where this Belmont course could've been? Ohare? Surely not Glen Ellen?

The fighting factions of trees and flower beds versus us open fielders is still at a fever pitch. No trees indeed!
