Kinda OT - Are we the VGPS?
« on: December 15, 2006, 04:41:03 PM »
I'm cozily ensconsed with a fine Aussie Shiraz before the TV on a cold Scottish friday night. The latest BBC-produced girly sitcom just started.
The theme tune is a very nice acoustic version of an old Kinks song noted below.
I was struck by a certain feeling of 'omigod, they're talking about us'....

"We are the village green preservation society
God save donald duck, vaudeville and variety
We are the desperate dan appreciation society
God save strawberry jam and all the different varieties

Preserving the old ways from being abused
Protecting the new ways for me and for you
What more can we do

We are the draught beer preservation society
God save mrs. mopp and good old mother riley
We are the custard pie appreciation consortium
God save the george cross and all those who were awarded them
We are the sherlock holmes english speaking vernacular
Help save fu manchu, moriarty and dracula
We are the office block persecution affinity
God save little shops, china cups and virginity
We are the skyscraper condemnation affiliate
God save tudor houses, antique tables and billiards

Preserving the old ways from being abused
Protecting the new ways for me and for you
What more can we do
God save the village green".

Ray Davies is a genius, but is he also psychic...? And , more fundamentally, is he a Golfer...?

Martin,
We are certainly frighteningly close, at times.
On the other hand - do you have the Blur album 'Modern Course Design is Rubbish' ?
How many folk singers does it take to change a light bulb?
21 - One to change it, and twenty to sing about how good the old one was.

Could we please hear "Lola" instead?

Now, more than ever, I am eagerly anticipating the trip to the Auld Grey Toon next March.

Lloyd Cole, you need to work on your Scotland tour dates and perhaps wrap them around the end of March.

Lloyd,
did you ever see Ray in concert? We most recently saw him a few years ago, strumming and reminiscing here in Fife. Nancy adores him - maybe even more than you! ;)
It was simply a joy. The man is easily the finest English poet of his generation. Ridiculously under-valued, much like one of my other faves, the glorious Jake Thackray.

Uncle Dicky,
ye ken fine weel there's a boatle o' braw rid plonk on pirmanint standby fur ye here in the oald coontry... ;D

Uncle Bill,
once again, ye prove yer incisive insight tae us all! The Belhaven is being poured as we speak. Lloyd, you know El Bill can not be denied...

"Well Im not the worlds most physical guy
But when she squeezed me tight she nearly broke my spine
Oh my lola lo-lo-lo-lo lola
Well Im not dumb but I cant understand
Why she walked like a woman and talked like a man
Oh my lola lo-lo-lo-lo lola lo-lo-lo-lo lola"

A GCA-ish link: which course most 'walks like a woman, but talks like a man'?

To me that suggests a gentle, benign appearance, with an absolute beast of a denouement. Maybe TPC Sawgrass?

I'd vote for (most of) us being dedicated followers of fashion.  Saw the Davies boys in Grantham in 1966.  F**k am I old..... :'( ;)

That's too good to pass up.  Of course in the end this is all relative, and hell I'd have loved to be there for that show....

But when you were watching that, I was three.

Ryan Simper was at least a decade away from being born.

If you picked Sawgrass as LOLA, I really don't want to see a Scotswoman in a dark alley round midnight...nothing soft and smooth and gentle in Jax beach...

Jim,
just be careful the next time you're this side, which kilts you're 'exploring'. The real girls tend to wear them ABOVE the knee...
I'll be more than happy to keep you right in the dingy darkness of those St Andrews nightclubs!

Would you guys consider most Ross courses of the Pinehurst area to walk like women, talk like men?

This is all getting too confusing.  Next, we'll be looking for courses that talk like a woman, walk like a woman, are a man.  Hello Devie!  :-\ ::)

Puh duown tha ba'el n slowwlie walk awaie, Martie me lad.  Denouement yer usin in yer lingo, a shurly siegn tha yer tung has begun ta spiew literarie, weil yer imaginashun has goan wield wi tha driink. ::) ;D  Keiep it reeil will'ya!

Martin -

You have struck a nerve! I am a big Kinks fan for many, many years. I saw Ray Davies do a solo show in San Francisco some years ago and saw him again this summer on his tour.

I also bot the CD of the "Village Green Preservation Society" earlier this year and even bot a book about the recording of that album in a bookstore in London in September.

One song from that album ("Picturebook") was recently part of a TV advert for Hewlett Packard printers and another of his songs ("I'm Not Like Everybody Else") was in a TV advert for an investment company.

While Ray D. is not a golfer, I believe one of the original members of the Kinks (either the drummer or the bassist) became a hard-core golfer after leaving the band.

By the way, there are a large number of vintage Kinks performances available these days on youtube.com. Some great stuff!

David,
a fellow Kinks fan!
I am even more annoyed than before that we missed a meeting! Coming over this year?
This 'new' version is by a delicious English lass named Kate Rusby. Hopefully, she's going to release the song sometime:

She's a lovely, folky singer with the sexiest voice....
