what would you name your own club and what would the logo be?
« on: December 01, 2006, 09:58:16 AM »
you've inherited a zillion dollars from a relative you've never met, so now you get to build your own golf course :)

what would you name it, and what would your logo be?

of course, for some of us where your course is located might influence the name and/or logo, so feel free to share your site too

mine:  The Jolly Dog Club - I love dogs and so do my wife and girls.....Bernard Darwin also wrote an essay by this name about one of his dogs

logo: a retriever-type with it's tail up and ears flapping and a club in its mouth , with a collar with JLA on it (those are the initials of my daughters)

199 played, only Augusta National left to play!

The Koala Club- I like dogs as well, but I have always liked these guys. I think it would make a great logo as well.

Paul,

What would be your architectural goals and how would you include your love of dogs in the design.

Maybe fire hydrant tee markers?  A lot of doglegs?  The mind boggles!

I guess there would have to be at least some doglegs for sure...

nah, no fire hydrants..but I could see little metal statues of the dogs for tee markers!

On my parent's property, there is a tomb stone from a lady who burned in a fire in the late 1800's.  Right beside the tomb is the creepiest tree you've ever seen.  Legend says at night you can see a flame move across the property to put itself out at the creek that bisects the land.

So I've always thought Haunted Tree Golf Club would be a cool name.  I would probably go with a silouhette of the tree or something for the logo.

I like the dog theme also.  I think I would put a big sign into the grill and name it after my dog.

When my brother designed the course for Roy and Ginger Rogers they used little Colt 45's as tee markers...Out of courtesy I didn't puke.  It is not an architects fault when owners act like 12 year olds.

I wouldn't name it "Dismal River" which has to be the worst name for a new course I ever heard.

I do like catchy names, so I think "Old McDonald" is a great name. The reason I like that so much, even though I know I am in the minority here on GCA, is that 99.9% of the golfers do not know who McDonald was and could care less.

When they get done playing Old McDonald every single one will have been exposed and I'm sure with all the literature that will be written, handouts, scorecards, caddies, golfers will know what a Redan, Eden, Biarritz, etc is. That is sooooo good for golf.

We are doing a renovation here at my home club and when I suggested we do something with 6 of the holes like Keiser was doing with Old McDonald, I got a stare like, "are nuts or something", but I think if those same people were exposed properly, it might have been looked at as an intelligent suggestion.

Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

and I don't think the river comes into play either Cary, which would be a reason against using it as the name

Cary - not to sidetrack Paul's topic here, but I am all for exposing golfers to CBMacdonald... that is great for the game for sure.

Just why do they have to do it via a name that's going to make 99.9% of golfers sing to themselves E I E I O and think about ducks and quack quacks here and quack quacks there?

Thus my suggestion "New MacDonald."  Al least that removes it from the song for the most part.

As for my own club, I don't even dream this grandly.  I guess I'd just name if after my Dad, the greatest man I know.  Denis Huckaby Golf Club.. the logo would be a simple script DHGC.  All would be welcome if they pass muster with Mr. Huntley, who would rule the club as benevolent dictator*.

Cary, for such a well traveled textile baron you are the worst speller of names I have ever had the pleasure of meeting.  Could you please explain to me what is good for golf about golfers knowing what a Redan, Eden or Barritz is...I think template holes died for good reason, most notably the Barritz.

note:  It is Biarritz and you might want to check on the name of the owner of Bandon.

I like this subject.

I see a lot of "mistakes" where clubs don't consider how their chosen logo will appear on hats and shirts.  My club, Fairvue Plantation, isn't bad, but it's not really unique.  It looks way too similar to the Oak Tree / Landmark tree logos that seems predominant in the 80s.  There's nothing distinctive about it.  Plus the detail of the tree limbs makes it difficult to apply to hats and shirts without looking like a messy blob.

Another example is Olde Stone (Arthur Hills course in Bowling Green, KY).  Their logo really is horrible, in my opinion.  It looks too much like a graphic design for a coffee shop.  It does NOT have the component of "class" that I think golf clubs should encompass.  I don't mean "class" as in snobbery (far from it), but it needs to be above the stylings of a common retail strip center logo.

Let me ponder this a bit. I'm sure I can recall the names I applied to courses I designed on computer games like Arnold Palmer Links and Leaderboard Golf (the old Commodore 64 game).  I'll get back to y'all.

If you actually granted me my wish and gave me my own golf club and all that under the premise that Old MacDonald be the name, I still would not have my own golf club. Dismal River would seem to be the greatest name ever, when next to Old MacDonald.

When it comes to Logos I believe they should be simple and to the point, without script.

My favorites are Sankaty Head, Seminole, Merion and Burning Tree.

I agree. I do like to see the year that the club was formed as well. Merion really is the perfect logo for me.

Concur also and I'm with Glen re Merion - love that one.  So hmmmm.... I'm trying to think of a pictorial logo that would capture my Dad... because I too prefer no script.  Got it.  A simple club breaking over a simple knee.  God love him the man does live and die with every shot.   ;D

Glenn,

To me the R&A logo that has been around some time is another perfect logo. The one that commemorated the 250th aniversary of the Club in 2004, with its fancy shield and date of founding is just too bloody awful.
