Just wondering would the 3rd hole at Astoria CC be considered tight since there are no trees?

Any pics..
Just follow the links in my post to the pics. That is why I asked how narrow is measured. The fairways may be the narrowest anywhere, especially since they run the whole length of the hole like that. However, the holes don't play as narrow, since almost all shots hit offline that don't clear the dune run back into the middle of the fairway.

Jordan,
Garland Bayley has posted a lot of pictures in earlier threads. Astoria #15 is tighter than #3 by geography. It is also tougher in the summer because you are playing against the prevailing breeze (it is a helping breeze on #3). It also has more trees "in play" near the green.

Garland,

When we played there I flared one out to the right and it got stuck behind that one little tree on the right, which is nearly impossible to do..

St. Enedoc #10 has a fairway which is about 4-6 meters wide in places. I hit it. Doak was circumspect describing this hole in CG.
Laurel Hill is a nine hole executive course in Gold Hill, Oregon.
Nect to I-5 a few miles north of Medford, the closest I have come to playing it is standing on the first tee and thinking I ws in a one lane bowling alley. Towering trees where the branches don't touch, they're interweaved.

Update: It was not Doak in CG, it was Donald Steel in his Classic Links...

Peter, 10 at St. Enodoc is scary becaue the fairway is not only narrow but runs out of space and is long to boot.  I'm not crazy about that hole.  I am not sure what to do with it,however.

I think 14 at Island works because the hole is not terribly long, but in the wind...

The 12th hole at Mimosa Hills in Morganton, N.C.  One of the tightest tee shots you will ever see and it's a par 5, although it is a short one.  The second and third shots are no bargain either.

Here is one:

Greenbriar Hills CC, number 13 is pretty narrow:
20 yrds wide fairway.  Trees encroach quite a bit.

This link doesn't do the narrowness justice as the view to the fairway is more from the left side of the picture.  Also, from the left trees down to the center of the fairway is about an 8 ft drop.  The trees on the right encroach very close to the right edge of the fairway and there is a sharp drop down from there.

One of the worst I've ever played is the 4th at the Pit Golf Links in Pinehurst. 232 yards with about a 20 yard gap in the trees to hit through. You can click the pic to make it bigger.

I would like to nominate #s 14 & 15 of the Player's Club @ Foxfire in Lockbourne OH near Cow-lumbus. 2 par 5s that measure 565 and  526 and are all the more narrow as the course has been up to this point fairly wide (possible exception of #4). Major pucker effect on the tee of 14. The link shows #15.

I'm disappointed in my Minnesota friends for not mentioning some of the holes at that place north of Hayward that used to have a lot of financial trouble.

Tamarask?
Telluride?
T something.

There are a few holes out there cut through tall pine and birch trees.  It is also memorable for the green-to-tee walks.  Despite these oddities it is fun to play.  I would assume it is still open.

Telemark. Cable, Wisconsin. A lot of fun to play. I don't know if it's still open.

Steve, did Greenbriar change its routing a bit?  I last played there in 1970.  #4 was a par 3 along the freeway then.  You had to walk a ways to reach the fifth tee, also along the highway.  Number 5 doglegged left and up a pretty big hill on the second shot.  You could see almost the entire hole from the highway.

Are those holes still there or are they NLE?  If they are not, hard to see how number 3 could be there either.

#11 @ Glen Mills GC just outside of Philly.  At 370 yds., it's a tough hole on a very good course.

Do any of these courses have tight holes like this on purpose, because they think it makes the hole better? I know at Pasatiempo #7 it is purely for liability issues, there were very few trees in playing corridors in the beginning of the course.

I would think that most people agree the holes at Astoria are better because they preserved the land as is.

ive got a couple...

US wise.... Has anyone played ""THE CLAW""

in Tampa area, university course of someone... i played a college tourney there in 99 and there was a par 5 on the back nine which scared the sh*t out of everyone off the tee and for the second lay up... dog leg left sharp...

UK wise ...and in England, there is a hole designed by Abercrombie at the Wildernesse Club in Kent #16 which is without doubt the narrrowest tree lined tee shot of its kind in our country!  its so tight ... (IMHO of course)

Delaveaga in Santa Cruz should win the award for the narrowest entire golf course.

The first hole is 495 and the way their video course tour says to play it is to hit a 200 yard tee shot followed by a 175 yard second.

There is OB left and lateral hazard right.  The rest of the course is quite similar.

JV - great call re DeLaveaga, a course that I love and wild-hitting Messrs. Benham and Pieracci hate.   ;D

The course video is right re #1, btw - absolutely no profit in trying to do anything but that for the first two shots.  But that's kid's stuff compared to #10....

Mindless bombers need not show up at this course, the home of thoughtful shotmaking.

God I hope Benham sees this....

Tom, I played DeLaveaga once back in the 1970s.  While I lived in Soquel for 2001-2002, I was never tempted to go play although I did drive up there one day just to see that it was still the same.  It was.  Some courses just don't fit some people's games.

JV - in recent years they've changed #6 (moved tee way up) and #18 (moved green to bottom of hill), but other than that, it's the same DeLaveaga.  And yes, some courses don't fit people's games or mindsets... those who just like to mindlessly bomb and flog do not take kindly to DeLaveaga.

I really like this hole! It has sort of grown on me much like the other holes around the church.  The fairway is plenty wide if you layup short of the dune.  The only only gets crazy if you try to hit it past the dune - not a clever play for most with the hazard on the left.  What is great about the hole is the second if you do manage to get yer teeshot a bit left of the dune.  The second has to be about 235ish (after laying up) with a vicious turn left.  The player is more or less trying to flip a 3 wood aimed straight at the church.  The 10th is wonderful for this shot alone.  What a great course St. Enodoc is!

William King;

We played 'Players Club' a month ago. That indeed is a very long, narrow hole, where you must make choices about need for length and need for accuracy.

Like the course a lot, BTW. After five holes thought it might be a bit 'ho hum', but then it livens up a lot!
