World's Narrowest hole?
« on: November 28, 2006, 01:28:09 PM »
From the discussion on joining a club, here's a photo of #16 at Everett Golf and Country Club in Everett, WA.

The narrowest par 4 I've played is #7 at Pasatiempo (update: I'm stealing the photo posted below because it's so much more illustrative than the one I had here):

But that bowling alley at Everett makes Pasa #7 look positively spacious. Any other candidates for World's Narrowest Hole?

Thanks Rick for posting that.  If you can believe it, that low angle makes it seem wider than it really is...

in the Confidential Guide Tom D mentions some course where the tree branches from each side of the fairway actually touch each other...

then there's 16 at Firethorn, where the trees do so to such a  degree that you cannot play thru them, you must go under or over..
199 played, only Augusta National left to play!

Isn't that the case at Cypress too?

I would nominate #16 at Franklin Park in Boston, where the tree branches hang over the approach so it must be played with a knockdown shot or must be DEAD striaght through the 20 ft gap, and this is with a wedge usually.

and #15 at Prestwick....there is almost no fairway here as it turns through the gorse and hummocks.  But...it is short, and can be played with a 5-iron and a wedge if I remember correctly...
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

Here's a pic of Firethorn's par 4 16th (from their website) that Paul mentioned.  I remember playing in a college tournament here and all three members of my group tried to play long irons under the overhang and hit the trees.  Mine got lucky and dropped out in the fairway but one of the guys hit a tree square and it came back into the tall stuff short of the  creek.  It's definitely one of the more awkward tee shots I've ever seen.

No picture but I believe the name of the course is River Greens near New Philadelphia, Ohio and the hole number is 13 or 14... It is equally as narrow as the photo from Everett and as the trees are oaks and the like you actually play throgh a tunnel for portions of the hole or at least it was this way 20 years ago.

it is(was) similar to the Firethorn photo for the length of the hole on a shortish par 4.

Last time I played it (long, LONG time ago), a whole lot of holes
at Minikahda looked like that Firethorn hole, to me. But that was a
lot of tree removal ago.

Is University of Minnesota No. 10 the narrowest hole in town? Seems like it to me.

Dan,

I can't think of another hole in the Twin Cities any narrower than #10 at University, but in the greater area, I think this one is even tighter. You've played it:

It doesn't look so bad from the green looking back toward the tee, but the tee shot itself seems like threading a needle. It's #2 at Bristol Ridge in Somerset, Wis.

Mayday,

I agree. I've never seen anything like this hole--a foursome has to walk single file to stay on the fairway... :o ;)

Dan,

Not any more. There's nothing like a good chain saw on a golf course... :P

What about Hidden Greens in Hastings?  I played the course once probably 20 years ago, but remember it being cut out of the woods and very tight.

How is "narrowest" to be determined?

"Scientifically."

it might have been well named?

If scientifically, then where are the measurements guys?

When a narrow corridor causes my palms to sweat, my cheeks to clench and my decision-making process between the driver, the five-wood and the three-iron to take longer than 8.5 seconds, that's a sufficient scientific measurement for me.

I have to wonder whether this thread was in response to Engh's suspicion that he had build one of the narrowest at 15 yards. I read about the Island Club in Finnegan's book, but don't remember the measurement. Sure candidates are the two at Astoria Country club.

Brad Klein described them as less that 12 paces wide in Rough Mediations and Peter Pittock and I think they are about 10 yards wide.

Having played both Everett G&CC here in Washington and The Island over in Ireland, I think that the fairway is much narrower on The Island's 14th but the imposing fir trees at Everett take the title for "Most Claustrophobic Tee Shot"!

Strangely enough, every time I play Everett's 16th, fondly referred to up here in the great NW as 'Hogan's Alley', I seem to birdie the hole. Split the uprights that are the two fir trees behind the green with a driver and it's an easy up & down or two putt for bird.

When I played The Island we (my brother and I) stepped off the fairway width and it was about 10-12 yards wide in most places, making for a VERY small landing area. Combined with the wind that comes off the water next to the hole, it can be a real nightmare!

Happy Holidays Guys!
