Today's harder quote
« on: November 03, 2006, 11:56:18 AM »
The island green speaks for itself.  Recent developments of golf architectural fashion in the United States have led to a conscious search for individuality and it is not uncommon to see new greens entirely surrounded by sand or water.  The sand surroundings have obvious problems in upkeep, while an island green in water, though pretty, may unduly depress too many golfers.  There is, nevetheless, a sense in which an heroic hole of this type may inspire or fascinate the player, even if it causes him to lose several golf balls.

I really haven’t a clue Mark. I guess Pete Dye would be too obvious so I’ll go with Donald Ross. Wasn’t he one of the first to create an island green?

I agree with the sentiments though. I always thought it fascinating that a hole that inspires emotion becomes memorable. If one played the 16th at Cypress Point but had not a clue as to the fame of the hole, would it still be remembered for the rest of ones life? I think it can be a great ploy to make a simple golfing experience last a life-time.

Peter Thomson. (It sounds like his tortured prose.)

I can picture the passage  in "THE GOLF COURSE"  where it talks about the named types of greens.  I don't think Fred Hawtree is the author of the quote. But sites the quote.  But until I get home thats the best I can come up with.

Tom S III is clearly a formidable newbie -it's not TEP under a pseudonym is it? FW Hawtree 'The Golf Course.'

Do I get some points for pointing out the tortured prose? ;)

BC - tortured it may or may not be.  Doak and a few others write beautifully constructed prose, but I read an awful lot of very badly composed articles/books in the golfing press these days.  And where are the literate editors?
