18 weeks of Oakmont - starting next week

I thought since the weather has pretty much turned here in the Northeast, I'd start a weekly series discussing the 18 holes of Oakmont, in preparation for next year's US Open. Next week will be the starter (the best starter in the game :)), #1.

I'll try to dig up some diagrams and photos, but all are welcome to add whatever they have - photos, diagrams, and, of course, opinions, both informed and uninformed! If anyone has any they'd like to contribute and need me to post them, email them to me at georgep@choiceonemail.com.

P.S. I don't plan on discussing alterations over the years, as I have precious little historical info, and that's a topic for someone else, not me.

From what I've heard, George, writing down all the revisions of Oakmont would require a huge volume.  Apparently every time somebody hit a ball where Mr. Fownes thought they shouldn't be able to, there was a bunker there the next day!   So I guess the course just evolved over the years into the monster it is today.

I haven't played there for 12 years, long before the tree cutting started.  It must be incredible to be able to stand on the 15th green, way out there, and see the clubhouse!

Great idea for a thread, I look forward to it.  I'm not sure it's possible to have a favorite hole at Oakmont, maybe just a hole you dread the least!  :o

One of the most interesting questions on Oakmont will inevitably be not just what-all they've done with the course going into this next Open but what exactly they plan to do with it coming out of this next US Open.

I know you're watching, Mark, you can't hide from me.  ;)

Sorry I haven't had a chance to start this yet. Work has been busier than expected, and I misplaced my yardage books, which I had hoped to scan and post in the threads to illustrate the holes.

I'll do some digging this weekend and try to get things rolling Monday or Tuesday.

Is it true that after you complete your hole by hole analysis of Oakmont you are going to tackle a hole by hole analysis of its neighbor, Oakmont East? ;D

All architects will be a lot more comfortable when the powers that be in golf finally solve the ball problem. If the distance to be gotten with the ball continues to increase, it will be necessary to go to 7,500 and even 8000 yard courses.

I'm really looking forward to this.   Oakmont is one of my very favorite courses, just from walking it a few times.  

I'm too scared to play it.  ;)

I'm REALLY looking forward to a hole by hole analysis of one of the great golf courses in the world.

In the past these kinds of discussions such as Jeff Fortson's analysis of #10 at Riviera are the very best of what the discussion group has to offer.

Thanks in advance for thinking of this.  Now will any of the Tour guys be looking in for some tips for this years US Open?  :)
