Yes, I agree.  The young man hasn't seen many golf courses, and is speaking from his own experience.

The 200th best course in the country is almost certainly better than the 100th best course 30 years ago.  Lots of great courses out there.

Not sure if its been mentioned yet but all the ballots have not been submitted for Top 100 consideration.  Ballots may be submitted this year for Top 100/Best in State courses up until 12/1/06.

Are Plainfield, Harbour Town and the TPC at Sawgrass really #95, 97 and 98 on the GOLF DIGEST ranking, and behind all those other courses John Kirk listed at the end of page 3?

Jeez, their rankings are farther off base than I thought.

Either I'm showing my ignorance, or is this one of those SAT questions where you have to guess which one doesn't fit?

For further perspective:

Plainfield was 49 in 1993, and 36 in 1987
TPC Sawgrass was 59 in 1993, and 31 in 1987
Harbour Town was 70 in 1993, and 35 in 1987

I believe a course has to be three years old to qualify for the top 100.  Another interesting case was Wannamoisett, which went from 44 in 2003 to off the list in 2005.

I was always surprised before I played Harbour Town that it was not more highly considered, and even moreso with the TPC. I've played HT now and still am surprised!

I also was surprised last time around when Point O'Woods dropped off the list from somewhere in the 70's range in 2003. I think its worthy of inclusion as well.

Maybe too early for Ballyneal  ???

Absolutely for Black Mesa.  Loved that course. ;D
