Several hole loops?
« on: September 20, 2006, 10:27:14 AM »
What are some of the best several hole loops around that commence from a natural starting point (the clubhouse) and end at a natural finish point (the clubhouse).

Engineers 1, 16, 17 and 18 is one of the best I've seen.  A couple others that come to mind:

GCMC 1, 2 and 18.

Bethpage Black 1, 15, 16, 17, 18 or 1, 17 and 18.

Several hole loops make great grudge mathces after "bs"ing a bit in the mens grill following a round!

What are some other examples of fun, and completely unforced several hole loops.  I guess 5-6 or less holes is the max since the loop should be significantly less than 9 holes.

And, again, is this design feature a strength or weakness?  Does it reflect a lazy architect that didn't stray far enough from the clubhouse or does it reflect a connectivity to a routing with an entrenched sense of going and coming.

Somerset CC (West St. Paul, Minnesota; Seth Raynor, originally), Nos. 10 (mid-length par-4 dogleg right, uphill), 11 (wonderful downhill chute-of-trees par-4, with a modified Road Hole green), 12 (long downhill par-3, with a Biarritz-type green). Three really good holes.

Half an hour of heaven, and then head home.

Jason - you're being way too coy, or modest - best damn instances of this I've ever seen were at Cuscowilla.  4 separate loops, all starting and ending at the clubhouse.

Please exclude the whiskey loop including #14 at Cuscowilla in this conversation.  I think any loop The Jans National (forward or reverse) would be preferable. :o

Cheers,
Brad

I'm already "homing" it with ECC, I figured I'd let someone else to that, I think Cuscowilla is the best loop course I've seen.

Of course, returning nines gives you double the opportunity.

Huck,

Better than the four loops at Merion East?

There are so many at Oakmont that you probably can't even write down all the permutations

I am not sure if you consider this a "loop" however you can play it pretty fast. 1-2-3-4-5-15-16-17-18 at Garden City Golf Club. This is this inward nine. My favorite 9 holes on the course.

Wayne - oh I know I need to do that.  But before Hamilton sees this and gets on my ass for an access request (as he is wont to do), just do understand I posted as I did just to clarify my statement re Cuscowilla.

And Dan, well... you'll have to ask JakaB about that.  I'll just advise one and all to be very careful with your "secret question"... those with the will to do so can try and answer those and if successful (as they surely could have been with naive me) can get into one's profile, where there is a "delete user" button at the bottom.

Jason,
Thanks for posting this topic. I was at a little nine holer( Rip Van Winkle) last week with a few people who help me in the shop and we were going over the same exercise about that course.

All the loops we could come up, no long walks to tees, starting and ending at the clubhouse:

1-2
1-2-3-4-9
3-4-9
3-4-5-6
3-4-5-8-9
7-6
7-8-9
7-8-5-6

I once turned up on spec at a funny little course near Huddersfield, called Outlane.  You get a good view of it from the M62.  There was an old boy in the pro's shop and he offered to introduce me, so my green fee was suitably reduced.  We went to the first tee and began play.  The first three holes form a loop back to the clubhouse, the 4th hole striking out over a deep ravine onto a moorland hillside.  After we'd putted the 3rd green he said, 'You go over there to the 4th tee.  It's too energetic for me.  I just play these three holes round and round until the bar opens.  It's a funny thing, you know, I've never had to play more than three holes before the bar opens.'  And off we went on our separate ways.

Prairie Dunes:

1, 2, 6 and 7.  Could also tack on 8 and 9 for 6 holes.

On our Renaissance Club project in Scotland, we managed to route it so that the third, fifth, eighth, fifteenth and eighteenth holes all finish within easy walking distance of the clubhouse.  So you can go out in the evening for as many holes as you wish.

Tom: My recollection is that there were quite a few loops available at Ballyneal - I don't have a plan of the course to lay them out.
