Architect designed yardage books
« on: September 19, 2006, 03:12:38 PM »
I've seen the yardage book that Gil Hanse drew for French Creek, and I understand that Bill Coore did Friars Head's, though I've never actually seen it. Anybody know of other examples where the architect designed and drew the yardage book for one of his courses? Any descriptions of what they look like or images from them?

Thanks...

Jeff:

I have not inflicted a set of my own drawings upon anyone else.

However, Don Placek from my office did do the yardage book for Stone Eagle, and it's one of the best-looking pieces I've seen.  Michael Cocking in Mike Clayton's office did the yardage book for Barnbougle which is also quite well done.

By contrast I've seen a couple of commercial yardage books for recent courses we've done which were not easy to read or easy on the eyes.

Friar's Head's yardage book has not been finished yet to the best of my knowledge. I know Tommy N is working on it using Bill's drawings. I believe Bill did the ones for Old Sandwich though which turned out great.

I like the ones that allow you to take notes and are not cartoon drawings.

Side note...

Do architects ever make their scribble, sketches, or drawings (conceptual) available for purchase?

I really want to collect for my house and office.

I doesn't need to be of the Mike Strantz finished look, but the more authentic field sketches are very appealing to my eye.

Sorry if this is a bit off topic.

Nick,
There is of course Mackenzies sketch of TOC that is hanging in the R&A clubhouse. Obviously he isn't the original designer, but if I'm not mistaken, I've seen from time to time reproductions for sale on e-bay. Check it out.

Agman,
I'm working on one... it won't be finished for a while.
And I assume the french creek yardage book was based on the same illustrations for the membership package - which was fantastic.

Nick,
If you like I could send you something one day.

Nick,

At Four Streams in Maryland the lunch placemats (paper) used to have a few of Steve Smyers' sketches.  It was pretty cool.  I have never seen this before...or since.

The French Creek book (if it's their still using the original) is black and white and taken from a really nice as-built that Gil did.  I put together the book with publishing software and they were printed and "bound" at a local copy shop.  Pretty simple and low cost, but outstanding because of Gil's drawing.

Yepper - we're still using them.  But like Eric said, Gil didn't actually draw them with a yardage book in mind.  Eric cut/pasted some as-builts like a wiz and created a really nice package.

Mike - the drawings are after the course was built.  The drawings you're thinking of were pre-construction, and the differences are pretty amazing.  Subtle, but amazing.

For example, #6 was originally designed with a hells-half-acre inspired bunker of huge proportions.  When I asked Gil about it in June he chuckled and said, "Yeah, we decided to soften it a bit".    We have some good players, but we're no Pine Valley :)

How many of the Golden Age architects hand drew their routing maps? I know there are a lot of Ross's drawings and MacKenzie's map (Nick - I got my copy via Auchterloines not sure of the spelling) of St. Andrews, but who else did this?

Did a Raynor or Thompson provide any hand drawings?

I know soon Wayne on Tom will get us all the great material that Flynn provided.
