My Pebble Beach Story (Labor Day 2006)
« on: September 17, 2006, 04:10:36 PM »
I won't bore you with backstory, especially since some of you know that I made my long awaited trek to Pebble Beach this past Labor Day weekend...

See the pictures below for a brief highlight..

First, I must offer proper respect to my caddie, Rock.  I cannot emphasize enough the value of a caddie, especially at a course like Pebble Beach.  He is absolutely the reason I played well.  Here you can see Rock after our tee shots on the seventh.  This was BEFORE I three-jacked it from 15 feet.  (Rock even tried to take the blame --- yeah, like he's the one with the yips).

Rock had the perfect line for the tee shot on eight.  I hit a three-wood that appeared very satisfying from the box.  As became the custom of the day, Rock and I discussed golf, music, and current events as we climbed the hill to the fairway. If nothing else, he kept me in a great state of mind.

We settled on a hybrid for the next shot, around 210 yards.  I used my Titleist 503H, 19-degree, Adila NV Stiff for the result you see below... (reverse angle)  *** Note the plug, Titleist!!!

*** NOTE: The small ball mark in front of the cup.

I cannot tell you what a thrill it was just to clear the cliffs & cove.  It was the shot I had psyched myself up for the entire trip.  I knew I could take that confidence to get through the ninth and tenth holes.

All hail Rock!!

Again, all credit to Rock, as this picture was his idea --- in his words, "put it in proper perspective."

My dad always told me that a hand written letter was the proper way to extend a courtesy.  Last week I mailed a letter to the Head Golf Professional, Chuck Dunbar.  I made sure to praise Rock, emphasizing how invaluable he was to my experience.  Rock is absolutely the salt-of-the-earth, Jimi Hendrix loving, earring wearing, golf enthusiast that makes an authentic caddie.  I cannot thank him enough.

Oh, I did score a 77 from the blue tees (6700 yards).  With the requisite 6 on the 12th (ha).

Man, I feel as if I have died and gone to heaven.  Thanks guys for letting me brag a little.

Nick, Thanx for the sharing and bragging about a world class shot on a world class hole. Rock is a great guy, as are most of the long time Pebble caddies. OK, a few are a bit too much, but that doesn't mean they're not nice. ;)

I was wondering your impressions of the new bunkers on #15. Since this was your virgin visit... to my knowledge, there never were any bunkers in the LZ on #15. The bunker on the right, approx. 75 yards from the green, was there, along with the greenside bunkers, and the one in the rear. The rest are all new. Did they fit the course? How did they make you feel coming off the 14th?

77 is something to brag about, well done.

Wow.  I never even realized they were new.  Looking back, I thought it all flowed well.

Side story to the 15th... our foursome contained 4 strangers.  One of the golfers hailed from Amsterdam.  He works in real estate development.  He rented a set from Pebble for the occasion.  Generally, he really struggled.

The sun broke through around the 12th hole (coinciding with my triple).  His tee shot on the 15th went high and to the right, finally resting near the fence along the road.  After a short pitch back to the fairway, his ball came to rest short of the LZ bunker you mention.

Yep, that's right.  The guy who really struggled all day, well he went Tiger Woods with one swing.

The flag was back middle, near a slope.  A bounce or two and the ball rolls in for a birdie.  We all knew that one shot would be all that mattered for him.
