Martin,

Rich Goodale apparently inquired about getting a block for a possible GCA outing and received no response.  Do you have any better contacts?  I too am interested.  By then I should be sporting a handicap just under their limit.

Is it possible that those fortunate enough to play TOC in reverse could report on the experience ?

It would be helpful if those reporting have played TOC in both orders.

Thanks

Pat

If you read my response earlier in this thread, I reported on my friend Mike Prystowsky's experience from last year.

He was quite disappointed in the RC because of the decades of maintenance that allowed gorse to grow and thrive in places CRITICAL to the proper play of the reverse routing. Unless they cut down that gorse during the past year the player is forced to take aerial approaches around greens that are impossible plays.

If you would like a copy of the reverse course strokesaver let me know. I sent copies to Tommy, Brad and a couple of others last year.

I spoke with Mike about this again yesterday.  Its not just the gorse but the rough as well.  The reverse course is not in their day to day maintenance considerations so rough that is OK for the counterclockwise routing is not appropriate for the reverse course.  He said that the strategies and intent for a good course are all there but it is not maintained for actual play.

I've had a few messages from people asking about grouping us together, and just wanted to say that I'm not really grouping anybody anywhere yet, and not sure if I'm the right person for the task, anyway.

I think the best thing for those who have applied for times to do is wait and see if you get in, and when that day occurs somebody can start another thread so we can see how many tee times/people there are from GCA.  Once we know that we can go to the links trust to see if we can be grouped together.

James, you need to apply!!!

I haven't yet received my notification that I'm in  :'(  BUT, assuming I am, here's the big question:

Who's in for the day at Muirfield two days after the Reverse Old Course day?  The plan would be to play that day, drive down to North Berwick the following day and play the West Links in the afternoon, then 36 at Muirfield the following day.  I would plan to fly out of Edinburgh the next day.

That would make the Muirfield day April 1st assuming we are doing the Reverse Old Course March 28-30th.

I was strongly considering a visit to Dornoch after TOC, but the weather is likely to be better back farther south than north.

Any takers?

I have not received anything yet.

Assuming I am in, I was planning on doing the N.Berwick Muirfield leg of the trip before heading to St. Andrews.  Sadly, I must be back in the office on April 2nd.

Uncle Bill,
remember you can only 'do' Muirfield tues or thurs. That would be 3rd April/5th April? Or perhaps week before TOC times?

My wife and I would love to play Muirfield (assuming we get our spot at TOC) but we would have to do it the Tues  27 March -- I can't stay through the following week

No drama if the 27th doesn't work for anyone else, but we would be in if it does (and we win the spot at TOC)

As usual, old FBD, you are correct. Since I won't be able to hang around too long, I will plan on Muirfield in advance and make a fast getaway after the Reverse.

Sunday 3/25 - fly to US getaway city
Monday 3/26 - arrive Edinburgh, Braids Hill, recover at pubs  ;D
Tuesday 3/27 - Muirfield Day, drive to St. Andrews   8)
Wed 3/28 - TOC
Thur 3/29 - New?
Friday 3/30 - Reverse Old Course
Saturday 3/31 - maybe North Berwick?
Sunday 4/1 - fly home  :'(

It appears James Bennett would like to play at Muirfield but not sure of his schedule.  If three of you would like to play at Muirfield on that Tuesday 3/27, please advise by IM.

David,

Great to hear.  Thanks a lot.

Can't wait until this kicks off.

Re the pre and post rounds elsewhere I'll have to wait and see what the work situation is but I'm definitely interested in Muirfield, Gullane or North Berwick.

I haven't received my Reverse Old Course ticket yet  :'( but hopefully next day or so.  We may have to get two tee times at Muirfield on 3/27 as I've already got three plus me and I'm sure others will want to join.  That will be fun as we can mix it up in the p.m. foursomes.  ;D

Send me an IM if you are interested...

Huzzah. Bill, sorry no Muirfield for me, will be a no frills except possibly for North Berwick. Now to see if www.kayak.com results in some good bargains.

Sunrises are before 7 am and sunsets about 7:45 pm. That's enough time for some gowf.

I will probably be in the area, and whilst not scheduled to play, can fill in at any venue, if necessary and available.  I would also suggest that some sort of gala dinner be held, where all players and hangers on can get together.  I'd suggest the Road Hole Grill at the Old Course Hotel, if people aren't scared away by a $50-70 food bill.  You only go around once in life, as they say....... :)

Please; I am not aquainted with the term 'Reverse Old Course', I'm afraid. What is it actually? You obviously can't play a hole backwards ....... so what ARE you doing?

Go over to the left hand column of this page and click on "Courses by Architect" and then Jeremy Glenn's seminal piece on the Reverse Old Course.  It was written well before the Links Trust had any idea of playing the course in reverse, and remains one of htre finest and most creative things written on GCA to date.

Enjoy!
