Gravesites
« on: August 19, 2006, 05:32:02 PM »
Working on an article and would appreciate any help.  It's a Halloween theme.  Besides Ballybunion what other courses you know have gravesites as part of the course?  I know the Fort Meade courses have an old cemetary as part of the property.  I'm especially interested in courses in the mid-Atlantic.  Anybody know of any 'haunted' clubhouses??

Thanks,

JC

There's an old slave burial site in front of the tee of the par three 8th hole at Heritage Club in Pawleys Island, SC.  I also believe there's a small Civil War burial site next to one hole at Blackmoor GC up in Myrtle Beach.

There are some Civil War graves on the front side of The Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Lake Manassas , Virginia. I think they are on the walk from 5 to 6, or 6 to 7 if memory serves me right.

Jonathon:  The property where The Knoll (NJ) was built was a staging ground for a section George Washington's troops during the Civil War and there was a small Union cemetary on site.

When Charles Banks built the course in 1928 the remains of a of the soldiers was moved to a location close to the the Ciff Wendehack-built clubhouse. A large flagpole was erected over the site and an engraved bronze plaque marked the memorial.

If a player insists on playing his maximum power on his tee-shot, it is not the architect's intention to allow him an overly wide target to hit to but rather should be allowed this privilege of maximum power except under conditions of exceptional skill.

Cemetary shots that come quickly to mind, besides Ballybunion:

11th hole, Crosswater at Sunriver, Bend, Oregon

6th hole, Devil's Pulpit, Chaledon, Ontario

12th hole, Keney Park, Hartford, Ct.

Just behind the short hole (#17) at the Creek Club there is a small graveyard.

The Golf Club of Tenn. has a pioneer plot with some very old stones  between two of the fairways.

Hardly mid Atlantic but the only public club in Hong Kong has several gravesites including several by the tee on the great 14th hole. Another splits the fairway on a par 4, #7 I believe.
Kau Sai Chau AKA The Jockey Club is the name of the club and the graves had to remain undisturbed in order for the locals to grant permission to build the course. It is built on a small island and is very picturesque.
Pretty good golf course as well.

Quarry Oaks, half way between Omaha and Lincoln NE has a quaint family cemetary between the 2nd and 3rd holes with some sort of historical marker, which I forget the exact details of now.

Jim Thompson's Angels Crossing is an obvious one, with a cemetary off to the NE corner of the property.
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

Jonathan,
We have one adjacent to our 5th tee at Hotchkiss.
Another I know of was at the now defunct Boston Corners GC. It was right behind their 2nd tee, very old gravesites. The 3rd tee at BCGC was the site where some 3,000 people gathered to watch the last legal bare-fisted prize fight between Morrissey and Sullivan (it lasted 37 rounds).
Boston Corners, NY, is also notable for seceding from the state of Massachusetts in the late 1800s. The town and surrounding area was eventually annexed by New York state, but in the interim the area became known as "Hell's Acres" and was populated by gangsters, gamblers and horse thieves.

If my memeory is good Lincoln Park in San Francisco has two tombstones of sorts on the first hole. Can anyone who has played there latley confirm.

There is a small cemetary adjacent to what was the 18th green at Cape Fear Country Club.  I think it would now be to the left of the 18th tee and 17th green.

Also, I believe there is at least one grave on the course at Cherokee Town and CC, Bob Crosby's home course north of Atlanta, though my recollection is that is not really close to being in play.

Jonathan:

I think you're finding out that this is pretty common. Around Kentucky (and many other places I'm sure) many courses are built on old farms and the family burial plot must, by law, be preserved.

The most interesting one in Northern KY is right of the 18th green at Lassing Pointe in Union, site of a Revolutionary War soldier's final resting place.

Don't you hit over a graveyard on the 10th hole at Old Head?

Johnathan,

There are hundreds of individuals ashes spread across  many of the courses at Bethpage State Park. In fact a number have been placed at the base of the flag pole in front of teh clubhouse. This actually led to a wonderfully poignant moment at the 2002 Open when a family came to pay their respects as they do every Fahter's Day and ran into a security issue. Some very understanding State Troopers escorted them personally and allowed them some private time.

As far as ghosts are concerned. It has been reported by many of the workers at East Lake that the ghost of Bobby Jones wanders the clubhouse corridors at night, including a few sightings.

In the Mid-Atlantic:
Westfields, right side of 12 or 13 fairway
Piedmont, driving range (tacky!)
There's one other I've heard about towards the Blue Ridge...Stoneleigh?

Perry Maxwell's grave is up on the cliff by the 17th tee at Dornick Hills. My impression is you are looking for sites that predated the courses but thought it worth a mention anyway.

There are gravesites to the left of the 2nd and 4th holes at the new Bright's Creek Golf Club near Hendersonville, North Carolina.  They did a nice job putting some iron fences around the grave areas giving them the respect that they deserve IMHO.

there is a cemetary right next to the chicago golf club - the foulis brothers (glen echo , etc) are buried there

they should clear out the trees at the creek to open up the gravesite  as it would make a really great back drop
