Shadow Isle (Pate) in n.j.
« on: August 10, 2006, 08:34:38 PM »
This course seems to have gentle shaping  and modest elevation change. From plans,  it appears to have  a healthy variety of holes in each par category, plus some strategic angles set by well placed  bunkers. The greens ,from club's website, look somewhat interesting    Any thoughts ?

thanks

Jerry Pate and his design team, led by Steve Dana, deserve more respect in current GCA.  Limestone Springs north of Birmingham, Old Colony in Tuscaloosa, Kiva Dunes and Steelwood in South Alabama, all are solid courses with good strategic holes and interesting greens.  They have done an excellent job reorganizing the old but soggy Pensacola Country Club -- flat on the bayfront -- into a strong layout with excellent drainage and challenging holes.  I don't know anything about Shadow Isle, but your comments reflect what's on the ground in the South.

Mark:

Well done effort by Jerry Pate -- doesn't make the grade among the elite layouts in Jersey but it's far from the "paint-by-the-numbers" designs that often come from Tour related designers.

Hard to believe that there that many courses now in Colts Neck.
