r-man,

You like Morgan Hill waaaaay too much,
I think it is distinctive and offer it as
an example of a standout course for several reasons.

I've played it about 8 times now. (MH)
I used to live in Colorado and have played
perhaps too many mountain goat courses.

MH stands out in my mind as a very clever
set of holes traversing some ridiculous elevation
changes in a myriad of interesting ways and tying
together as a golf course at the same time.

My opinion is far from a drive-by.

Again, Newport National (so far, a single play with J.C.)
did little to show me anything new or unique, but
rather a very good, very solid, high quality
top-notch yet average modern golf course.
I would seek out more new (to me) places to visit
before I'd return unless someone I knew asked me
specifically if I wanted to play NN.

(And WE love RI; it is on my and my wife's short list
of places to move next, so there's nothing working
geographically there.)

But that does not make it a good/very good golf course. It makes our friend Kelly a very good architect. Separate and distinct conversation.

PS. I mostley agree with you on your Newport National and Rhode Island views. I have not stayed here but from a bike this place looks awesome down near Sakonnet:

I would go out of my way to
go to/recommend Morgan Hill;
I would not go out of my way to
go to/recommend Newport National
as something distinctly clever and
different in the world of modern
golf course architecture.

... and I agree to disagree, sir!:)

I also didn't say "great" here in so many
words but rather opined that MH > NN.
**************ahem .....
I also here and now admit my mistake in
that NN was originally to be 18 pvt and 18 pub
not 36 pvt as I wrote before. Bad redanman, bad!

Mike I think if you go to Naples your batting average will be below 200 real fast. In fact it will be off to single A ball for you my good friend. lol I must remind one again I was the last defense for Art on here till that round robin of unbelievable courses in the Naples area. In a moment of almost jacka b proportions I lit into all things Art only to settle down and remember what a solid hard working professional he really is. Art does give his client what they want. I am so pleased to hear one of his courses is getting reasonable reviews in such a nice area.

that cartpath is seriously ugly. not a constructive comment i know, but it's true.

A question related to the cartpath comment: Is there a great golf hole in which the cartpath crosses the fairway in a landing zone?

The 14th at Newport, an otherwise kind of fun par 5, has cartpath everywhere you look.

Which makes me wonder if it is ever possible to have a very good golf hole if the cart path can't be hidden of at least pushed off to the side. Is this a 100% fatal design flaw?

I would assume there must be a hole out there that is SO good that it overcomes this distraction, but I am hard pressed to think of one.

The cart paths at NN are not its highlight.  They do look much worse tho from the Google map than in person.  They are made of crushed sea shells, which beats asphalt, as the ball does not bounce wildly.  To their detriment they are noisy to ride a cart on.

Yes, I do take a cart if I play with my wife as she has an artificial knee and another on the way.  What's nice about NN is the cart paths are seldom in play despite being relatively close to fairways.  They makes it nice for those with disabilities when it is wet and cart path only.

BTW the 14th is lots of fun.  Played it 2 weeks ago and thought my shot was a bit too far left with the pin cut a bit to the right.  Hit the knoll to the left of the green and ended up 8 feet or so from the pin.

I like #14 as well.  From my playing experience, I don't remember the cart path being quite as annoying as it appears on the picture.  Probably because I didn't get a sky-bounce either time I played it.
