Pacific Coast Am at Olympic
« on: July 18, 2006, 09:27:56 PM »
For those in the Bay Area who haven't heard, the Pacific Coast Amateur - a good tournament with a strong field this year - will be played at the Olympic Club from August 1-4. I'm planning on spending a day or two watching and I'd enjoy meeting up with some GCA'ers there. This is just an early notice and I'll plan on bumping this thread up considerably a couple of days before the event itself.

Matt,

When I heard the Pac Am was going to be at Olympic earlier this summer, I began kicking myself in the head wondering why I decided to stay in Indiana for the summer. What a treat for the tournament to play a course such as the Lake Course.

Enjoy the course while you're there, and I'll just have to catch Olympic next year at the 2007 U.S. Am.

Matt -

I saw Robert Gamez in the Pacific Am on the Lake Course in 1989. He was probably still in college and finished in the top 5. It was won that year by Randy Sonnier, an airline pilot out of Houston.

A lot of very good golfers (Curt Byrum, Bill Mayfair, David Berganio, Jason Gore, etc.) have won that tournament over the years.

I was out there today and the course is in great condition.  The rough lines are basically intact for next years Amateur.

Its kind of a shame they haven't finished the new tees on #2 and #5 but will be an interesting test for next years Amateur.  I'm sure the USGA will be watching.

I used to be on the PCA Committee and it is a really good event.

The Pacific Coast Am used to play on a rotation of:

LA North
Olympic - Lake
Eugene
Seattle

Over the years, LA North and Olympic dropped out, but Olympic has come back and hopefully will continue to be a regular site.

Recently they have played at Capilano, San Diego CC and Bandon Dunes.

The Team competition plays for a trophy called the Morse Cup in honor of Samuel Morse.  The first or second PCA was played at Pebble Beach and there was a rumor that Morse had offered them the course for the first week in August forever, but the trustees at the time turned it down because they wanted to rotate it.

I also spent some time on the PCGA Rules Committee.  To reinforce JVB's remark, politics made for some unfortunate decision making in terms of selecting sites.  Since the Pacific Coast Golf Association is composed of 14 regional golf associations, many of them advocated the position that each association ought to get a chance to host the championship.  Gradually many of them did but at the expense of losing the regularity of LA North, Olympic-Lake, and Eugene CC which were considered the anchor courses for the event.

I will check that this weekend. I do hope they do, for it makes for a great hole for the young and long.

Matt, Joel, Gib, Tully, Scott C. or any other bay area dudes  etc,

I am planning to go out and follow a friend playing in this event.  I hope they play into the afternoon as I will be working all morning each day.  I would like to meet up with some of you if you, like me, also want to see some expert golfers navigate a classic in air conditioned SF.

I'll plan to go Wednesday for sure. I don't have to work (downtown) until 2:00. I'd be happy to get to Olympic very early. As always, if anyone can pick me up in Cole Valley and/or get me closer to downtown afterwards so I can get to work, I would be very appreciative!

I've never heard of another tournament alternating courses twice. I haven't seen the Ocean Course yet so Thursday is a possibility, too.

I do hope we can arrange for a few of us to meet up.

It will be very interesting to see how the scores on the Ocean compare to the scores on the Lake.

One practice round for two tournament courses? Does that mean that most of the field will play one course blind?

I am pretty sure the tournament was played with the same format (2 rounds on each of the 2 courses) when it was last held at the OC (in 2000).

There are practice rounds on the 30th as well.

I don't know but I doubt it.  If they worked on cutting it and seeding it properly it probably could have been but I think Pat has too many items to worry about.  Maybe Kevin knows?

I was up there on Sunday afternoon (and a balmy 70 degrees it was), the back-back-back tee on #3 will not be utilized as it does not exist ...

Unless they actually build a tee for the 3rd hole ON the chipping green, all the tees that can be built, have been built!

Mike is afraid of heights, so he doesn't venture back that far.   :)

They could tear down the clubhouse, create more length for number one.

I'd really like to go tomorrow (Wedensday) - I don't have to be at work downtown until 2:00. It's really the only day I can go.

Who will be there?

Can anyone help me with a ride to or from the course?

(I'm currently staying with a friend just off 280, near the Ocean Avenue exit and the Balboa Park BART station.)

I certainly hope to meet up with a few people at the course!
