Queenwood

Well, this looks interesting. Golf World mentions 5 to look for in the future in GB&I, one of which is Queenwood, a David Mclay Kidd design in surrey. The one bunker we can see in the photo looks interesting. Anybody across the pond been there yet?

Jeff

The course came up in discussion sporadically a while ago (maybe 2 years).  It's a very exclusive place and is in the heathland mould.   A couple of friends of mine have been there during its construction and I think the general impression was that it wasn't true heath but probably a good course nonetheless.  I have a few pics that I can post.

Jeff, Paul

RT and I drove past it and looked around..You can't get inside the pearly gates and drive in three..but what you can see from outside looks quite promising..Not true heathland but had the look of a place to play..I think it is 200,000 quid to join or something..I would like to play a game there..Better than Wisley.

200k sterling? I didn't know such a thing existed. That is remarkable. Are the established clubs all completely full?

I could be wrong Jeff. It is hearsay on the 200,000 quid..but the gates were closed unless you were a member..

perhaps paul and my friend RT can comment or add colour..

The club was developed by Fred Green, who also developed Nantucket.  He's had no trouble selling memberships as he wants to, although I'm not sure if the price was quite as high as quoted above.

I walked the course this spring, and liked it.  Very severe greens -- wild stuff.  Several Euro pros are practicing on it before The Masters.

The bunkers are all faced with heather sod, but the roughs are just seeded with heather and it may be some time before they mature.  In the meantime, the roughs and the sand are fine places to be, but if you're on the faces of the bunkers you're "x", which is a bit weird.

Tom Doak-
The other 4 courses highlighted as future contenders for the Top 100 in the November issue of Golf World are: The Kintyre Course at Turnberry, Doonbeg,  The Devlin Course at St. Andrews Bay and The O'Meara Course at Carton House (Ireland).

As part of my European Institute of Golf Course Architects Diploma we were shown around Queenswood. The whole heathland ideal has been artificially created.  Huge sand deposits were found on the site and these have been mined and spread over the entire course at huge expense.  They also brought in the Head Greenkeeper from Hankley Common as Course Manager due to his huge expertise in the establishment of heather.  This place is something special.  I can't remember the greens being wild but I know there was minimal work done from paper and most by eye by Kidd's excellant shapers.  Does anyone know which company the construction crew were from?

cheers

Jamie,
Highland Golf Services did all the shaping, Roger Sheffield did the bunkering, Jeff Knapp the Tee complexes and I shaped the Greens. The company was started on the heals of Bandon Dunes...Jim

Two pictures in the latest edition of Links. Sure doesn't look like heathland.

Jim,

Is your company still going and are you now working in Hawaii for David?

Would you be interested in work in Scandinavia?

If so send me an e-mail to:

brian@phillipsgolfdesign.com

Brian.

PS. Do you think the greens are wild at Queenwood?  The photos David and Paul showed me this year didn't look too wild.
