How many whackjobs have you met?
« on: June 29, 2006, 05:16:26 PM »
Okay, I was thinking about the giant social network of GCA today.

How many (and which ones) GCAers have you met?

My list:
Wayne Morrison
Mike Cirba
Doug Braunsdorf
Cory Lewis
Alex Stravides
Jamie Slonis
Jim Sullivan
James Bennet
Phil Young
Daryl K. Boe
Craig Rokke
Bill Vostinak
Tom Paul
Chris Holcombe
Dave Maberry
Pat Mucci
Steve Sayers
Steve Shaffer
Mike Malone
Craig Disher

That makes 20 for me, though I may have omitted some...  :-[

Kyle - start attending GCA-related events and one's list grows quickly and exponentially.

I haven't kept track of such things, it's not in my nature to do so and if I tried to recreate it now I'd embarassingly leave at least a dozen off... But I'd venture to say I've met somewhere's around 100 whack-jobs from here.  And there are likely several who've met more than I have - the Emperor most likely, Scott Burroughs, just off the top of my head.

The cool thing is this:  I've yet to meet one whack-job I wouldn't go out of my way to tee it up with or have a beer with again.  THAT is the coolness of this place... and the part my wife continually finds impossible to believe.

Huck - who is one of the great people I've met here -:  next time I'm in town let me talk to your wife and I'm sure my fine persona will convince her  ;)

Paul - please - I keep you away from my wife and she from you because I fear she's gonna see what she's been missing and finally cast me adrift.

Kyle,

I can vouch for you that everyone on that list is a total whackjob!  ;D

Also, perhaps you could share how you met Craig?  ;)

Oh lord, that's for another thread for another day.

We shared a fine round a few weeks later though at the same place.

No blood was shed - cept for my ego.

George,

We really need to add each other to the list sometime. I believe I owe you a cheesesteak and an Ayn Rand conversation.

I thought that it was just the handsome Mike Benham that you worried about..

Sean - good catch - but it's because of him I have learned to be wary.

As Sean knows, I'm worried about Benham because I made the sad mistake of actually allowing him to meet my wife... ever since she keeps mentioning "that handsome Santa Clara guy."

Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Tom Huckaby is exactly right.  I have played now in four KPs, two Dixie Cups, one Buda Cup, various other hook ups, hosted a number of GCAers, been hosted on many occasions, and cannot count the number I've met.  We have met by appointment in St. Andrews, Pebble Beach, Long Island, all over the place, and I have never been disappointed.

All have been complete gentlemen (and a couple of nice ladies!  ;D) and all very committed to traditional golf values.  Golf architecture is a passion but traditional golf, dating back to childhood, is the predominant linkage.

Thanks as always to Ran!  ;D

Wahckjobs - wow good description.

I tallied my list, and it has come to 30 (edit, 32).  Some of them are 'Doak 10' wackjobs, others are your more typical Doak 3 wackjobs ;D.  Take your pick from this list.  I guess this reperesents 2% of the 1500 certified wackjobs on this site.

US NorCal
Ed Getka (and mrs G), Sean Tully (an unbelievable historian/turf manager), Sir Bob, Pete Galea (titanium man) and Dan King ( 8))...and Kevin Reilly and Matt Cohn (both singin in the rain).

US Philly/near Philly
Wayne M, Sulli Jr, Kyle, Willie Dow, Bill V (and Mrs V), Jason Mandel, Steve Sayers, Mike Malone, Craig Rokke and TEPaul

UK
Tony Muldoon (amazing researcher, unbelievable for someone who didn't know what golf was 5 years ago), Sean Arble (a cracker :o), Martin Bonnar and Rhic Goodale (young beyond his years)

Down Under
Neil Crafter, Mikes Clayton and Cocking, plus about 10 others that I had the pleasure to meet at St Andrews Beach (I could list you if you like).

GCA is really like a sailor, having a girl in every port (except with GCA they are whackjobs! :o).

And this list leaves out the guys who I'm sure I have met, but actuall didn't :(, eg Matt and Mike near NY. Ditto for just about every other place around the globe.

Now, I haven't met Jordan Wall, but we have IM'd re posting photos several months ago, so I knew that Jordan Wall must exist - theres a whackjob to meet in the future, perhaps down under.

ah memories. apologies if I left anyone out

I havent met too many.

Sean Leary, one of the funniest guys I know and one of the coolest as well.  Great guy and cant wait to play next Sunday!!
Pat Howard also, who is a kick in the pants.  What a great guy!!  I need to figure out how to beat him, he is too good!
 :)
And, on Monday, Jesse Jones.  I am sure he is a great guy!!

EDIT
I have yet to meet with the person who started this thread but after talking with him for a decently long while I have come to the conclusion he is not a complete whackjob
 ;D ;D ;)

The Aussie golf book is now safely in Ed Getka's collection.

More than I can count, and like Huck I won't start a list because I am sure to leave off enough to embarrass myself. I am pretty sure I am up around 75.

Not as many (yet) as I'd like:

Mayday Malone
Wayne Morrison
Michael Moore (just briefly, as he was playing Rolling Green with Mayday several weeks back.)

Hopefully, my list will expand in the near future.

All architects will be a lot more comfortable when the powers that be in golf finally solve the ball problem. If the distance to be gotten with the ball continues to increase, it will be necessary to go to 7,500 and even 8000 yard courses.
