Glenn - don't be so sure.
Because yes it was painfully penal to the sides, but the problem was it also played VERY long, at least from the back tees. You couldn't just punt and hit irons off the tees because then several par fours became unreachable.
On top of that, as some have mentioned, the greens are very sloped and very fast.
It required the full package.
In any case, it matters not now - today's course is still tough, eminently fair, and well... eminently average.
