Best of Decade 80s
« on: May 19, 2006, 11:41:08 AM »
I am borrowing this thread from years ago, the decade was the 40's. I would like to hear the 80's. Off the top of my head, I will nominate the Honors Course-1983

Wasn't TPC @ Sawgrass 1981?

Shadow Creek - 1989
Haven't played it yet but probably should be on the short list.

I'm pretty sure the ocean course is 1991. Therefore replace that by Blackwolf run.
What I find interesting is this. People say the 80s was the worst decade for arcitecture, but it could easily be argued that it was Pete Dye's best. Interesting.

the interviewer asked beck how he felt "being the bob dylan of the 90's" and beck quitely responded "i actually feel more like the bon jovi of the 60's"

The Ryder Cup was played at the Kiawah Ocean Course in 1991.  That was the year the course opened?  That doesn't sound right (although I suppose it's possible).

I had a scout through the R&A Golfer's Handbook to see what earth-shattering courses had been created in the British Isles in the 1980s.  There's nothing that is going to challenge any of those courses on the further shore of the Atlantic:

East Sussex National
Slaley Hall
The European Club
Rolls of Monmouth
Westerwood Hotel
Newmacher
Letham Grange

are the best-known of the bunch.  Westerwood has the name Ballesteros teamed with Dave Thomas as architect.  Newmacher briefly came to fame when its touring professional won the 1999 Open Championship.  Letham Grange was touted as the Augusta of Scotland when it opened, but I don't think it's achieved its own major yet.

My eye was caught also by the entry for Musselburgh Old Course - yes, 1982!

Eckstein-Longaberger (which is not a favorite on this site...just ask Glenn Spencer) opened in 1999.

That is correct.

Mark, how could that be?  Did the course re-open after an extended period in 1982?

I'm a bit biased on this one, but I think Wade Hampton would be one of the contenders.  Having heard many comments about the the course, there is one thing that stands out.  Most people talk about the beauty of the place and all of the mountain vistas, and yes there are plenty of them.  But the thing the separates Wade Hampton (and a couple of others) is the subtle strategies that Fazio puts throughout the course, particularly when it comes to angles of play and this fact is not noticed the way it should be because visitors are always caught up with the beauty of the place.

By the way, Wade Hampton opened on June 13, 1987.

The first few courses that came up in my mind were...

Wade Hampton
TPC at Sawgrass
The Honors
Long Cove
Shadow Creek

Andy, I think it's just a typo.  Proof reading a book of that kind must be an absolute nightmare.

Ken Dye's effort in Farmington Nm. deserves mention.
