Best 54 holes in a day - a wish for all of us.
« on: May 18, 2006, 04:03:13 PM »
You have the opportunity to play 54 holes in one day at three courses that are a close enough drive to make it possible - where do you go? (Just a dream) In no particular order:

1. Shinnecock, Maidstone, NGLA

2. Pine Valley, Merion, Huntington Valley

3. Plainfield, Baltusrol, Somerset Hills

4. Cypress Point, Pebble Beach, Spyglass

5. Sand Hills, Dismal River, Wild Horse

6. 3 Courses at Bandon

7. Other suggestions

Jerry - interesting question!

Note you'd need a VERY long day to make the 54 happen at #5 in particular... not sure if that could be done - it's an hour from WH to SH and I think another hour from SH to Dismal... And it's funny, a great man and I were discussing something similar to this last night... That is, if I am at Sand Hills, I'd want to play Sand Hills... I can't imagine leaving the property to play somewhere else!

BUT.. for purposes of this discussion, let's say you want to try it.

 ;D

How about we add Winged Foot West and East and any of the many great clubs near it that could make a nice trifecta?

Olympic Lake-SFGC-Olympic Ocean or Lake Merced or Cal Club....

In the public arena, besides the king Bandon x3, a fun one would be Pasatiempo-DeLaveaga-Pajaro Valley.... although again you'd need a crowdless day and a will to drive fast to the last round...

There have to be a bunch in Chicago that could be added...

But that's all for me for now.

Jay - seems like you're kinda on the same wavelength as me re your Black Mesa listing... If I really had to pick a perfect 54 hole day, it would be 54 holes at Sand Hills.  But I'd be quite content with 54 at Black Mesa as well.

Re the Monterey selection... hmm... I'm not sure I wouldn't take MPCC-Dunes over Shore for the Best 54.  Cypress and Pebble are a given.  But man I do like the Dunes... of course you couldn't go wrong with both MPCC courses and either Pebble or Cypress either... this would be a very nice choice to have.

Are all of those others really close enough to make 54 possible?  You'd have to have very little drive time...

Not doubting you, just wondering if you factored that in.

St. Andrews Old-New-Eden or Jubilee?

Dornoch-Brora-Golspie would have to be doable in mid-summer... talk about lots of light in the day...

This is getting GOOD!

Hiawatha Landing, Conklin, Greystone

Jay,

You wouldn't be able to squeeze Greystone into that group very easily.  Let me instead insert Mark Twain.

It's basically 30 minutes from Conklin to Hiawatha, and about another 45 to Mark Twain, which is quite doable.  Greystone up in Rochester would be a real stretch.

Jerry, thanks, fun question.

These three, because not only are they within a 15-30 minute drive from eachother, they're all 15-30 minutes from my house in downtown Toronto. In no order:

1) Weston, a Willie Park design from about 1920. Arnold Palmer won his first tournament there, the 1955 Canadian Open.

2) Scarboro, a 1924 Tillinghast design that's hosted four Canadian Opens.

3) St. George's, the Stanley Thompson design that's been ranked 1st or 2nd in the country for years.

For a diversity of architects and styles - historic private, public new and private new all on the same island, try Newport CC (Ross/Tilley), Carnegie Abbey (Steel), Newport National (Hills) all links style courses on Aquidneck Island, Rhode Island.

If we want to limit ourselves to just one Winged Foot Course, Fenway keeps it in the Tillinghast family.

This is a really interesting thread.
How about Royal Birkdale, Hillside and Formby.

Moortown, Alwoodley and then a real drive to Ganton but it could be done.

Jay, what made you decide the Pinnacle course at Troon North over the Monument? I have not had a chance to play the Pinnacle and was wondering how much different it was than the other. In the next few months you coud possible have two courses a stones throw away at we-ko-pa.

This is a very interesting thread indeed...  And Phil, that Tillie Trifect with Fenway sounds perfect!

Now what I want to know is if anyone here has actually DONE any of these?  I seem to recall someone doing all three Bandon courses the same day...

Closest I've come is a great day once playing both Half Moon Bay courses and then Sharp Park... No, those don't make this list, but it was fun and it was three different courses...

Come to think of it though there was another... Gleneagles Kings & Queens + Auchterarder GC.  God that was a day....

I might have more, too - the memories are returning.

 ;)

You guys are right about Chicago...just about a BILLION possibilities given the proximity.

I'll throw one out...Chicago Golf Club, Medinah #3, Shoreacres

...or how about Blue Mound CC, Blackwolf Run River, and Whistling Straights a bit farther North?

Out my way I'd say that a Wakonda, Glen Oaks, Harvester out by Des Moines would be a solid trifecta.

In Cleveland I could see a Brookside CC, Canterbury, and The Country Club in Pepper Pike as a nice mix as well.

Tom,

I played all three courses at the Homestead in this order.

Lower Cascades
Cascades
Old Course

The last 9 on the Old Course was a total waste..
I was spent, it was getting dark and the rain was moving in..

That is VERY cool!
And I hear ya re being spent for the final 9... that's pretty much my story at Sharp Park.  It became finishing as a matter of principle.   ;D
