Before Dick Youngscap and C&C created Sand Hills did groups of people travel thousands of miles and spend days hiking together, enjoying the vistas, the walks and each others company ?

In my opinion, par is a fine relative measure for some. "Par" for a number of reasons has served golf well for a long time. It's very useful for some and for some things but it's not for all and it can be dangerous if allowed to define the architecture of a golf hole in some circumstances. Ultimately I think par is a useful tool for a number of reasons but it should never be allowed to be the engine that runs things in golf or golf architecture. As for how any player views par---I say let them look at it any way that makes them interested or happy.

TE- I think you've got the right idea. Pat- maybe as the kids say you should take a "chill pill". I'm not sure I got all of what you were intimating re: Sand Hills, but it seems that all kinds of people have ventured to places far and wide just for the joy of experiencing golf.  I don't think too many of us go to  places like Bandon, Whistling Straits, Myrtle Beach or the RTJ trail, or venture abroad to the British Isles for any other reason than to have just a bunch of fun coupled with the comraderie that goes along with it.

What I don't get is why people go out, hit balls, ride in a cart but are not really golfing. They throw down another ball at their whim, call out bogies when they had at least triples. Why do people go golfing then not play golf? Many of these people have handicaps. Yet have never golfed, under the rules. It befuddles the mind and when these so called golfers, collect the winnings, it's simply not cricket.

Of course one ought to treat the concept of "par" as he sees fit - there is no right or wrong here.  BUT... would you agree that if one is concerned with his best chance at success on any given hole, any given course, it is best ignored?  That is, play the hole as you deem to be wisests, not as what the number on the card demands.  That's my point here, one I have very little doubt you will agree with.

I dont have a problem with people having fun, but to call it golf, is seriously in err. Isn't that why the deutsch test players before allowing them on their property?

Huck- It's ironic how many times these people, not golfing, hold up play because they seem to know the importance of that 18 inch putt.

Patrick is bigger than life, both physically and mentally. He has to be big, to hold such a big heart.

Might sound funny coming from a struggling golfer like me, but I think Patrick is mostly right. Deep down, everyone is competing against something, even if it's simply a desire to hit the occasional perfect shot.

I've related my story re the extreme of this before:  Dornoch - playing awful - actually threw the whole bag into the high rough off of the 9th tee after yet another awful shot.  Reality then hit me - what the hell am I doing obsessing over shot quality on one of the world's great courses like that?  It was a valuable lesson and JOY has been my mantra as well at great and not so great courses ever since.

The assumption was they don't hold up play.  If they do - and I have do doubt they do on crowded courses - then something else is rotten in Denmark.  So if that's your point - along with the creation of bogus handicaps (although all that putt-taking and mulligan-using would make their caps LOWER, not higher - these are the guys you WANT to play against net) - then I'm with you brother.

But if guys are just having fun, doing whatever they feel like, who cares what it's called?  What possible harm could they be doing?

Patrick is partially right, but also partially wrong.  See, the man is a competitor.  It's not in his nature to understand that one can play this game non-competitively.  He'll come back in and tell me I'm FOS also - he's done it before - but those who understand how this can be done (like me) just politely nod.  One either understands NATO golf or one doesn't.  It's not in Patrick's nature to understand.  But I bet you do.

Even medicated, don't give in so quickly... I have to believe you understand NATO golf also, Mike.  And before Patrick blows a gasket, of course none of us do this ALL the time.  Sure we care about our shots, our rounds, our matches, our scores most of the time.  But at that odd perfect time, perfect course, with perfect friends or whatever... well... NATO golf is pretty damn fun.
