Climate Change on Lancashire Coast
« on: May 10, 2006, 01:36:46 PM »

If you dig deep into this set of reports there's quite an interesting analysis of the effect of climate change on the dunes system of the Lancashire coast, Royal Birkdale in particular - it's known locally as the Sefton Coast.  Interestingly, surveys carried out on the Sefton Coast reveal that in certain parts only 38% of people surveyed knew that there were world class golf courses in that area, and a survey in Manchester revealed only 21% of those questioned knew that there were golf courses there!

Happy reading!

Mark -

For some time I have thought the Lancashire Coast could be the strongest 60-90 miles of links golf in the world. In the US, it could also be the most unknown/overlooked as well.

It is a little surprising that it is also rather unknown/overlooked in the UK. That region needs to do a better job promoting itself golf-wise. Maybe with this year's Open (and Buda Cup!) at Hoylake, the level of recognition will increase.

David, It doesn't need to sell itself as a golf destination.  The courses attract sufficient visitors without publicity to keep the members' annual subscriptions quite reasonable and none would want greater wear on the course.  How are you keeping?  Mark.

Mark,

Haven't you heard?

President Bush announced there is no such thing as climate change.  Best to toss that speculative, liberally-tainted rag into the dustbin.    ;D

Mike, We have a great satire show here, Dead Ringers, and now that you mention it I remember clearly an edition of it in which President Bush stated categoringly that there wood be know climax charge without his personal intertention.  I may be wrong, but I think he specifically mentioned the Lampashire coast and Royal Bonkdale in particular.  I'm sorry to have consigned something your President said to the back burner.

After all that luvvie duvvie between Jack Straw and Condescension Rice they've now gone and sacked Straw, so we no longer have a direct line to the President apart from President Blare.  Come back Julius Caesar, all is forgiven!

The report does recommend promoting the area as a 'Golf and Eco Tourism Coast'.    Even the  'National Trust Formby Squirrel Reserve' was mentioned.

In any case, am looking forward to my trip to Southport and playing a few new courses, namely Hesketh, St Annes Old, Wallasey, West Lancashire with a trip up north to play for the first time, and hopefully she'll be my new dreamboat girl friend, Silloth on Solway.

The good news is that about the time global warming kicks in, I should be at average soil temperature. :)
