Golf Architecture magazine new issue out soon!
« on: May 01, 2006, 07:54:40 PM »
Hi all

The annual Society of Australian Golf Course Architects magazine 'Golf Architecture' issue 9 is now at the printers and will be available soon. Those who have subscribed will be mailed their copy while those of you whose subscriptions have expired or have never subscribed are invited to visit our website www.sagca.org.au and order their copies. This can be direct on our website or you can download an order form and fax or mail in your order.

This issue is our largest ever, expanding to 88 pages plus covers and their is a host of interesting reading on a variety of topics, along with some great photography from the likes of Larry Lambrecht, Joann Dost, David Scaletti and Gary Lisbon.

Articles include:

>Feature Essay - Hotchkin, Hutchison and Campbell by Tom MacWood
>The Bottle Hole by George Bahto
>The Mornington Peninsula by Ross Perrett
>David Strath by Mike Clayton
>Mission Hills China by Brian Curley
>Searching for Sandy Parlour by Noel Freeman and Tommy Naccarrato
>The Ocean Course at National GC by Mike Wolveridge
>Indifferent Holes by Jeff Mingay
>The Making of Sebonack - Q&A with Jack Nicklaus and Tom Doak
>Mackenzie's sketch plan for Royal Melbourne by Neil Crafter and John Green
>Newcastle GC by Mike Clayton
>The Innocence of Links Golf by Geoff Shackelford
>Linna Golf, Finland by Tim Lobb
>Bunker Restoration by Dr Mike Hurdzan
>Great Aust GCA's Carnegie Clark and George Lowe by Neil Crafter and John Scarth
>Design Tools by Mike Nuzzo

An interesting range of subject matter we think and a great range of well known authors, including a number of GCA regulars.

We look forward to a good response from the afficianados on GCA and feel certain those who subscribe will get their money's worth. The magazine would not have been possible without the support of our advertisers and especially that of our major sponsor TORO.

regards
Neil and Paul

Excellent news, Neil.  Can't wait to get my copy.  I ordered all the back copies from your website and they are each one a treat.  I encourage others to do the same while they might still be available. Keep up the great work!

Neil and Paul's publication is without peer. I learn more every time I go through my back issues while I await the new issue with great anticipation. Keep up the great work guys.

This publication is far more than a magazine.  The back issues are like good books that I use as resources often.  For anyone interested in golf architecture, it's a must have.

I can't wait to receive the new issue.  Keep up the great work guys.

Neil,

Thanks for the reminder, I've just sent in my subscription.

To everybody else,

Unbelievable quality, excellent articles, anybody who frequents this site with any regularity MUST own all nine issues of Golf Architecture.

The Americans and English have shown a lot of interest in issues 5 and 8 that have toured the world with me. (Or they were being very polite).

I assume that those interested can also order the back-copies from that same web-address, can't they?

James,

Are they the copies Chris Kane spilled his beer all over down at St Andrews Beach? If so you must have done a fine restoration job!!  ;)

yes.  All is forgiven Chris.  I think everyone that has picked up my set has been impressed (well except perhaps George Blunt and the Royal Sydney article - I think he is still seeing Dr Katz on that one).  The commentary from fellow golfers on the world-wide perspective of the magazine, and the quality of photos and topics appears to be universal so far.  Some nations appear more interested in the words, others in the pictures!

Saddened to hear about the beer accident - a tragic waste.....
However, glad to hear that the people you showed the magazine too enjoyed it. Yes, all 8 back issues are still available to order from our website. Not sure what the problem with the Royal Sydney article in GA8 was for George Blunt and hope Dr Katz's consultations are covered by Medicare! If there is something about the article he didn't like he is welcome to write a Letter to the Editors.

Thanks for the encouragement and hope that more GCA regulars order the magazine.

Guys-

I got some brief exposure to the magazine via James B. It's  content and the photography made for a great first impression, and I was also surprised with the amount of coverage afforded architecture and courses in the US. Great work!

Neil,

What is the circulation of Golf Architecture? Curious to know how many other nuts exist out there.

This issue we are printing 4750 copies, around half of which are distributed to Australian golf clubs and their superintendents. Our SAGCA members distribute to their clients, consultants etc and then we have a number of subscribers - currently we have around 400 in over 20 different countries, but predominantly Australia, US and UK.

Craig
We have consciously sought to give the magazine an international feel but with an Australian point of view if I can put it that way. The magazine for this issue contains more articles about international courses and historical matters than it does about Australian ones.
Look forward to seeing you as a subscriber!

The magazines sound pretty informative. I would really like to get my hands on one and see what they are all about. Once a year I get some crazy man come into my studio classes trying to sell me a subscription to Architectural Record. Can we get some crazy Aussie to come around to the U.S. schools?

Why doesn’t the ASGCA think about pursuing this kind of thing? I am pretty sure some of their members know how to write a page or two.

You can order one copy of the new issue from the website - it will cost you A$18.95 including air mail postage, which is around US$14 or so. Suggest you get this one and if you like it you can then get the back issues.

Suggest there are already enough crazy Aussies in the US without wanting any to visit your school!

The ASGCA could certainly do a similar magazine if they had the will and desire to do it. We do it, on a base of 25 members.

I received issue 8 a week ago and it was worth every single aussie dollar I paid for it.

Highly recommended publication.

Why would the ASGCA put out a magazine?  You guys put out a much better one and you do it without costing them a penny!

Because there are only a very few members of that society, and I'm saying VERY few I think would be worth the time to read.

Ryan,

I suggest you save up your money for a while to get all nine issues....  Beleive me, they are worth it.

If its too much money, go for issues 5 to 9.

You won't be dissapointed.

Guys
The response to the new issue has been great and plenty of orders received. Yes Yannick, agree with your advice to Ryan - best to start with issues 5 to 9 if funds are limited as these are the ones with the most content and higher production values.

Tom
I don't know why the AGCSA would put out a journal like ours - perhaps to disseminate a voice on golf course architecture and promote the game and the profession. Other than that, I'm beat!

Mark G, Eric and Kelly
thanks for your kind words and appreciate the sentiments expressed.
We do our best!

Neil,
Just got mine today and thanks for the kind note. The issue is as expected, mind-blowing. The content is outstanding.

I'm not into self-promotion and almost want to feign from writing anything, but anyone that doesn't subscribe to the newest latest issue is missing one of the great publications in the Sport today on Golf.

Phenominal stuff Neil, and you and your efforts are to be commended and congratulated or whatever my brain can come-up with this late in the day...Wait, make that, This early in the day! YIKES! I better get to bed now!

I would read you anytime!  And I mean that "pardner." (What is any GCA conversation without a Matt Ward-ism?)
