Fathers and Sons, a true Shinnecock Drive By Story
« on: April 11, 2006, 09:16:28 AM »
I figured this one deserves it's own thread.

It's late Fall a couple of years ago and my wife and I had taken a weekend trip out to the Eastend, on the way home we're on Montauk highway and I say, "let's drive through Shinnecock."  So off we go, north off of 27a and at about the clubhouse (which is on the left hand side) coming towards us I see a a fellow remarkably resembling my Dad driving just as slowly as we are, swan necking all about like we are to absorb as much of the scenery as possible without actually stopping the car.

Sure enough it's my Dad and his girlfriend.  As we exchange greetings my wife says to my Dad's girlfriend "I see the apple doesn't fall far from the tree!" and we all laugh.  With no idea either of us was out East that Sunday morning we end up in the same place, at exactly the same time, but coming from entirely opposite directions.

You might say that says alot about my Dad and me.  ;D

Funny story.   At least he wasn't standing on the 10th tee teeing off.

On a similar note, I was fortunate enough to play both Maidstone and Shinnecock and the same day in early October a few years ago.  After that great day and a wonderful evening on the veranda at Maidstone, I decided to make the drive from Southampton to Bethpage early the next morning to play the black course and still catch my afternoon flight back home.  Getting on the road to Bethpage at 4:00 in the morning I missed a turn and in a half awake stupor found myself back at the clubhouse at Shinnecock.  I first expected a team of elite "homeland security" forces to come and drag me away to Guantanamo, which never materialized.  After coming to my senses, I threw the car in reverse and sped back down the hill, after a split second pause to comtemplate taking a quick walk around the clubhouse to the 1st tee to get a fleeting glimpse of the front 9 below in the moonlight.  In hindsight, I should've taken that glimpse.  ;).

Cheers,

That is a great story, Jason. My dad was never into golf so my story would have never played out that way.

Now if you were driving by the US Tennis Center eg Arthur Ashe Stadium or on the 7 to Flushing, that's possible!  :)
