Are you watching the Masters in HD?
« on: April 09, 2006, 08:45:14 AM »
I am curious how many of you guys are watching in HD.

Just say yea or nay.

BTW, if you say nay, get HD pronto.

Much better for evaluating GCA not only at the Masters but at any tournament televised in that format.

For myself: I am watching in HD (50" plasma).

I'm watching the Sunday Morning Tiger show. 75% of the time is dedicated to one player, now tied for third.

The bird sound track is really getting annoying.  Glad I don't have 5.1, too.

Hi Voytek.  I set my alarm for 5:00 AM, and am watching on HD here in Oregon.  Great theater.  I can't believe how good these guys can putt.

I calculate Tiger is only on about 30% of the time.

You might make the argument that Augusta is set up to favor short hitters.

We just might have a Mickelson-Woods pairing this afternoon.

I am watching the CBS coverage on the public airwaves via my "rabbit ears" antenna.

Oooo, how retro!

Just so you know, Michael, the high definition signal is easily received through the air, using an antenna.  Of course you would need a HD receiver and compatible display.  I live out in the country, so I have a satellite dish.

Tiger train wreck on the back nine.  How about that Darren Clarke?

Unfortunately we won’t experience a HD broadcasted sport event here in Sweden until this years world championship in soccer.

I am watching the live broadcast for US Masters through our digital cable net. Still it looks, like all the PGA events, like the signal is transmitted from Mars.
Blurry colours, no depth of focus etc.

I'm not one to root against Tiger but I sure as heck am rooting against Jim Nantz, whose smarmy ass-kissing started on the last couple holes Saturday night and is at an almost unprecidented level today. It's not so much the constant Tiger worship as it is the overfamiliar, know-it-all tone of voice he uses. Blech!

If there were ever a Tiger/Freddie pairing (which come to think of could happen today at about even par) Nantz might have to excuse himself and spend the back nine in the men's room.

To answer the original question, I have been watching the Masters in glorious high definition but this morning's emergency coverage is not being passed in HD by our local affiliate. This afternoon should be beautiful, though

Ouch, Eric - I feel for you.

We've had HD in the US for, what, 10 years now?

Finally Europe is catching up, though. They say we in the US will even get the World Cup Soccer in HD - yes!

Michael Moore - check whether your local Over-The-Air (OTA) networks broadcast in HD. If they do, get yourself an HD set (some are quite cheap these days - I do not believe they even sell non-HD sets anymore, at least in sizes over 34"), and a Silver Sensor indoor antenna ($30).

Thank me later...   ;D

Sky are probably releasing the first batch of HD receivers here next month.
Unfortunately, the BBC still has the Broadcast rights for The Masters, so God (or Hootie) knows when we'll get to see Augusta 'properly'.

Sky will be broadcasting some Footie and Golf and other Sports and Two Movie Channels in HD when they get going.

As a bonus, the HD boxes will also have a BIG hard drive (from the Sky+ Box) rather like the TiVo, so we'll be able to record stuff in HD quality too. Yippee!

I have one of the cable company's HD digital video recorders and it is great. Time shifting and skipping commercials and still a gorgeous picture. What's not to love?

Are you guys getting the BBC/Discovery co-production of 'Planet Earth'?
That looks astounding on my HD-ready LCD (not HD signal yet) so I can't imagine how incredible it must be in proper HD.

I'm watching in 42" HD -- both USA Network and CBS are broadcasting in NYC in HD. Amazing. HD allows the viewer to see aspects of Augusta that aren't readily apparent on "normal" definition TV. For example, the absolute perfection of the greens and bunker lips. HD also reveals how truly ugly and irreparable a mug Lanny Wadkins has.

The first couple of days I was watching The Masters upstairs and in my room on older TV's, one a 32 inch and my TV I think is 21 inches...

Anyways today I was watching The Masters on our 54" Plasma in High Def and the course looked so much different it was amazing!!

I will bet that Nantz says "harbinger" before 5:30pm

Yes, on a 42 inch Panasonic plasma.
It's two weeks old and I am utterly spoiled.
I've spent years trying to tweak for perfect broadcast black, and there it is.
The sound mix is very good, as well.

You could find the  HD on Thursday and Friday, too,  assuming you  tuned into your local CBS digital channel.

They certainly tweaked the green on those hole fly-overs.
It's too much chroma.

Watching in HD for the fifth year on my 50" CRT rear projection.  Until about two years ago the handheld cameras were not HD but now everything is, even some replays from previous years.

The pictures look better every year and this year even 100% of the commercials appear to be in HD.

Fantastic - I don't know if it differs network to network, but after watching the Final Four on HD, CBS appears to be far superior to the other two...

I'm watching on a 13" black and white... but it is equiped with smellovison.  The loblolly pine pollen made me sneeze, but those Azalea and Dogwood are incredible! :o ;D

Watched the final round at a friend's home on HDTV.  It was unbelievable how much more clearly you could see the elevation changes and terrain at Augusta.  For example, the second shot to #13, the ball was much more clearly above the players' feet (except for Lefty!).  Ditto for the slopes on #10 and #18.

And congrats to Phil, he played head and shoulders above the others, well within himself and few mistakes.  It was disappointing to see Freddy miss every putt, and Rocco's 10 on #12 was excruciating!  In spite of that +7 score he had an 80 today, so good golf except for that train wreck!  Tiger's gesture after the birdie putt on #18 said it all for his Masters.  :P

Watched in HD for the first time this year.  I thought it was incredible.  I really feel like you get a better appreciation for the elevation changes and the undulating greens - or maybe I was just watching closer this year because I've heard Patrick going on so much about it.

The only thing better than watching in HD is being there. And if you're in one place when the roar comes from somewhere else, HD is better.
