Some more of Barnbougle

I'm not much of a photographer but here are a few shots I took a few weeks ago.  JC

The stern 8th

The wonderful 7th

Show me the intended target....

One of the gallary...

Some of the more unpleasant of the Barnbougle denizens...

Those are nice pictures Jonathan - looks like they have cut the fairways since I was there. They were a bit furry over Xmas.

That is an excellent photo of the 8th hole (your third). Maybe you should also explain that the first picture is a backward look towards the tee, also on the 8th.

I think I also saw that kangaroo - in my case he was standing vigil behind the 2nd green.

Great pics, JC!

Your last pic should be titled 'Lord of the Flies'.

We never had any trouble with flies when we were working on Barnbougle.  (I figured it was just too windy for them.)  But the flies at St. Andrews Beach were unbelievable two summers ago, for about a month there.

What is the season for the flies? I certainly don't want to be there then.

Great pix Jonathan. That one of #7 I particularly like. Were these early morning pix?

Ed, there is a product called Aeroguard which costs $5 at any supermarket - spray it on and you won't have any trouble.

Ed - flies are the dirty secret of golf down-under! When we played at SAB in December, the flies were terrible, and a gale-force wind did not bother them! It is true you can smear stuff on - I am not sure that it is 100% effective. The locals will know better but I think they are variable - better some years than others.

Philip, Aeroguard is 100% effective if you apply enough of it!

Chris,
Is there a typical season for these buggers? Are they the biting variety, or just annoying?

Just annoying - completely harmless.  They're around in summer.

Ed - pics taken just before sunset.  Flies are seasonal - they go away in the winter when it's colder (June-Sept).

Chris - Barnbougle owner, Richard Sattler, told me there is nothing you can do about the flies.  They eat DEET for lunch.  The stuff we smeared on seemed to attrack them!

They do not bite - they are just an annoyance.  If they were the biting kind, Tasmania would be a deserted island.

That aerial of the 8th is a great shot.

Re other wildlife available we had an echidna cross the fairway in front of us when we played.  We also saw about half a dozen wallabies.

If Australian flies were of the biting kind then the whole continent would be uninhabited.  I grew up on a Dairy Farm 2 hours north of Melbourne.  Guess how many flies 200 or so defaecating cows attract  ;D Give it time and you learn to live with the flies.  Aeroguard and the like have some effect, sometimes the effect is better then others.

I checked out the Barnbougle site last night and see that the holes have been given names.  Some are good, others a little corny.

Ifr you are worried about the flies, buy one of those bush hats with the wine corks dangling off the edges, and spray the corks with Aeroguard and/or Malathion.  Then buy the Monty Python video of the Philosphy Department at the University of Wagga-Wagga, call yourself "Bruce" and Bob's your uncle, you'll get on just fine! :)

Brer Rihc,
As one who spent his most formative years regurgitating every Python sketch the day after in the playground(schoolyard?), I must correct you. I think you'll find the University of Woolloomooloo was the home of the Bruces...

and of course, David Hume could out-consume Schopenhauer and Hagel!!!

The greens are not yet infested, however......

I knew I'd missplel one of them! Why'd it have to be the five-letter one? Huh? ;)
Good to know the Nuzzoes/Nuzzes/Nuzziae? are safely upon our hallowed turf!
NB yesterday? How was it? Apart form the infestation...

NB was NB.  A bit moister than usual, but occasionally  recognisable.  Nuzzo's cut-sliced persimmon drives rolled like superballs, but the greens were holding and making ball marks!  Putted very true, however.  The barmaid in the club tried to sell me a pint with 2 inches of foam, but I told her I was frae Fife, and that nonsense was put an end to........

flies are harmless, especially nestled on your back.  the bloke in that picture would not even know they are there.

Sean - believe it or not the aeriel you suggest of #8 is not an aeriel at all.  I scambled up a particularly tall adjoining dune and, perched on top, took the shot.

It's a little disconcerting bushwhacking like that.  We were told by our local during our first Aussie round (New South Wales) that 9 of the 10 deadliest snakes live in Oz and to not go into the brush looking for our ball(s).
