Wayne,

The reason I asked is because there is still a small hump at the back center to back-left-center that foes up to the edge of the green. It sounds as though PV records indicate the pimple was popped some time ago, but I was just curious about this feature. It is a much less dramatic feature that is really only about half on the green, but it is very clearly a hump that has an effect on golf balls going towards the back center of the green. Do we have any detailed photos of this green? I will search around GCA.com right now.

Jim,

I think aesthetically it looked awful (I don't like contrived features like that) and I doubt it meant that much to too many shots on such a large green.  Certainly a ridge would look better and affect playability better.  I think it is just fine as is and see no need to change anything, especially given the lengthening of the hole.  That's a pretty long approach now.  What do you hit into there from the back tee now?

I haven't played those tees, but I think the hole is about 475. As it is everywhere, firmness may make it play shorter (on that hole I could get to 160 or 170) but also much more difficult.

I disagree with you about that pimple (as pictured) not coming into play too often. Because the front of the green is so strongly canted from front-to-back, when its firm most every ball gets to (or just off of) the back-right part of the green. Many of those balls would have to deal with that pimple when the pin is near the middle of the green or the little bit left of middle they can actually get it.

I do agree with you wholeheartedly though about its uselessness. It would look contrived and completely out of place, regardless of any maintenance issues. One thought though (to reduce the concern of scalping on the top of it) would be to grow a little tuft of rough up there. Maybe a foot or so in diameter and keep it a well groomed 4 inches high. That would exponentially enhance the Mucci Mound. ;D
