Buda Cup, Hoylake, October 2006.
« on: March 28, 2006, 04:01:06 PM »
Finally - an update. Apologies for delays - I am a slave of the global capitalist system which can be a gruelling task-master. :)

The event will be from October 2-4 2006. It is based loosely on the Ryder Cup format - two teams of twelve from US and Europe, with two sets of foursomes matches, two sets of fourball matches, and one set of singles.

We have the tee at Hoylake from 2-3pm on Monday 2nd, and will probably play 4 BBBB.

We have the tee again at Hoylake from 10am, and at 2.30pm, on Tuesday 3rd - both times probably to play foursomes.

We have the tee at Wallasey on Wednesday 4th from 9.30-10.30 and 1.45-2.45. We will presumably play 4 BBBB and singles here. Since Wallasey is the home of stableford, that format will apply to at least part of the golf there.

We have a booking at the Leasowe Castle (1592 :)) for twelve twin rooms for the nights of October 2 and 3.

We will have dinner in the club at Hoylake on the evening of  Tuesday 3rd. If circumstances allow, Mark Rowlinson has offered to sing!

Costs:

Hoylake - £115 on Monday, £165 on Tuesday (both include lunch). With luck, this could be negotiated to £250 all in. The dinner will cost £30 per head, ex-drink.

Wallasey golf is £55 per head for the day, £5 per head for lunch.

Leasowe Castle is £85 per night for twin room, £70 per night for single.

If you assume another dinner at about £30, and you share a room - all in cost, if you play all five rounds, will be around £450 (pre-drink).

To deter frivolous suitors there will be a deposit - £80 or $140 per person. This should be paid by cheque to Sean Arble, 36 The Close, Cleeve Prior, Worcestershire, WR11 8LF, England. Indicate your interest on GCA by all means, but if you are really serious, send Sean the cheque!

In the event we are oversubsribed, first come, first served will apply. In addition, if we know in good time that we have a good turnout, I will approach the club to see if we can organise a match with RLGC, to run alongside the Buda event. First come first served would also apply to that event - obviously there is no guarantee that this will take place, though it would certainly be fun. With or without that match, it would certainly be good if we can get club members to come to the dinner too and add some local spice.

Those who have previously indicated an interest include - and I have probably forgotten some names - Sean Arble, Mark Rowlinson, Rich Goodale, Ran Morrissett, Gene Greco, Bill McBride, Tiger Bernhardt, Lloyd Cole, Andy Levett, Paul Turner, John Krystynak, Tony Muldoon, Craig Disher, Chris Kane, Brent Hutto, Michael Whitaker, Darren Kilfara, Nick Leefe of Alwoodley/Hoylake, and sundry members of Littlestone (who we played last year).

I hope you can all make it - please confirm/reconfirm/retract - and many others besides! Please indicate whether you are starter for the whole event or only parts, and whether you want accommodation, so as to assist with planning.

As Mark Rowlinson's post elsewhere shows, in the lucky event we are oversubscribed, we would not want for good places to play in the general vicinity.

I am sure there are many small issues I have forgotten about and some big ones (who will be the captains? ;)) but this should get the ball rolling.

Philip

I found it interesting and a bit ironic the only nonstop from Manchester to Houston is on Pakistan Air. lol Oh those Bushies, what they will not think of next.

Thanks for your efforts!  The itinerary looks superb.  You can count on me for probably Tuesday night dinner and some golf.  Most likely Tuesday afternoon (maybe am as well) and Wednesday morning (maybe afternoon as well).  The cheque has been struck.  If anybody is interested in sharing a twin for the Tuesday night let me know.

Hopefully we can get enough guys on board early so you can have as much time as possible to try and pull off a match against RLGC.  A match against Hoylake and dinner at the club would most certainly be the highlight of my year.

If people have questions or comments about the deposit please email me.  sean@classicbadges.com

Great stuff, Philip (and Mark)

I'm in, and will send my 80 drinking vouchers to Sean posthaste.  I'll play all 5 rounds (if selected), and will even be prepared to do a duet of "I Got You, Babe!" with Rowlinson (I'll be Cher, since I have the lower singing voice....).

Phillip, I will be accompanied by son David McBride (plays off 8 but has no links experience!).  I am getting a check off to Sean for $280 tomorrow.  Thanks for your magnificent work getting this Buda III off the ground and running.

Is the weather so balmy up there that you have taken to drinking halves?

Sean

When the object is quantity rather than quality I drink pints, which at least up here cost about 2.5 drinking vouchers.

All

Take a look at the hotel Mark has found.  What a gem!  It will be the HQ for the R&A at their little meeting at Hoylake in mid-July and I just hope the old geezers don't trash the place!

Great stuff , Gentlemen.
I can never rule out my so called career popping it's ugly head up and spoiling things, but I have been planning on working around this for some time. So I'd like to play all 3 days. I will probably be mid tour or some kind of promotional activity, as my next offering is due in September or so. I'll get a check out to Sean and I'll book the hotel myself. That is a great find, by the looks of things - Merseyside is a veritable wilderness for hotels.
My 2 cents - maybe we could play 4 ball better ball in the afternoon the second day at Hoylake. I doubt this is a busy time of day for locals. And at Wallasey in the morning, what about fousomes stableford?

Sean, do we need to book rooms at the hotel, or just let you know we'll be there along with the requisite cheque?

Bill/Lloyd etc: I have sent a deposit to the hotel to secure our bookings so you do not need to go to them direct. No problem, of course, if you choose to do so, just so long as you keep us posted so we know who needs what. If you do go to them direct you should probably mention that you are linked to the GolfClubAtlas event.

Lloyd - maybe you can accompany Mark in his mooted performance  :D (many thanks, btw, are due to Mark for finding Leasowe Castle which looks a great venue).

Re your pm suggestion of 4BBB at Hoylake on the second afternoon, the secretary did not feel there would be time to get around. But if there is room to flex things closer to the time we can certainly try.

Incidentally, if anyone is flying  into London on the weekend ahead of things and would like to play at Huntercombe on the way up - it is about half an hour from Heathrow, towards Hoylake, let me know.

I'm in for all 3 days.  I'll sort you out with a cheque next Tuesday Sean.

I have friend who has expressed interest so I'll get him to let me know ASAP.   If he doesn't come through I'd be happy to share with another non smoker.  Please put me down for Monday and Tuesday nights at the Hotel.

Also, I was thinking about travelling up by train (reading Darwin has convinced me I've got to try it sometime) but if having enough cars locally is an issue then I would be happy to bring mine.  This kind of detail can be sorted later.

Thanks to all those involved with organising this I'm looking forward to it.

Could you please add me to Leasowe Castle booking list for the 3 days?  I'm happy to share.

PS--I'll have a reasonably big car down there and will be happy to chauffeur anybody during whatever time I am sufficiently sober.

I've made a reservation for a single room at the hotel. I'm told I'm an awful snorer..
I'd be happy to back up Mark, if I'm able. I'm afraid my repertoire does not extend to victory songs, in fact I seem to specialise in defeat. So maybe I should stick to guitar.

Lloyd, I'm sure residence in the USA qualifies you to play for them?

(unless of course you're just trying to get them to relax  ;) )

I expressed an interest on the earlier thread but I can only make it for one day, probably the Monday. I'm on a golfing trip to the Costa Del Sol in September and spending two days at Turnberry later in October so I don't think my bank account and my wife's patience would take more than one day at Hoylake!

Are you taking reservations from one dayers at the moment or would you prefer to try and fill the places from people staying the distance?  If I'm in I'll send my deposit off whilst I'm still in funds!

Thanks, Philip, great organizing.

I'll send a cheque to Sean today and book into Leasowe for at least 3 days. I'll be available all 3 days to bring the US team back to ground level.

Philip - I'm re-confirmed for the entire event. I'll send a check for $140 to Sean today.

At this point I'm planning to arrive in the UK on Saturday 9/30 and stay through Saturday 10/7. Since I don't know when I will arrive (or leave) Leasowe Castle I will contact the hotel directly and book a single room.

I'd love to hook up with anyone for golf on Saturday, Sunday, Thursday or Friday.

Also, I'm very open to sharing an auto/van rental.

I will send Sean my cheque this afternoon, but if you find you are oversubscribed at the hotel I am quite happy to drive home each evening.  Similarly, if you have too many competitors I volunteer to be the first person dropped from the team - I am only a liability anyway - I am quite happy to play purely social golf.

What is the weather like over there during October? Predictable at all? Also how late do you get light?
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.
