Mike Clayton on The Truth Behind the Power Game
« on: December 17, 2005, 05:30:00 PM »
There's a fantastic and fascinating article in today's Sunday Age newspaper about a round Mike, Geoff Ogilvy and Bob Shearer had at Royal Melbourne a few weeks back, using a persimmon driver and butter knife one-iron.

Well worth reading.

It's a pity they didn't print the whole article - there was more about Ogilvy marvelling at how much fun it was to play the old clubs - but the really interesting thing was he was only abot 10 yards shorter with the wood.
He did not miss the middle of the club once and still had the same high pure flight.
For those who know the 8th West - about 345 yards - he drove it onto the front of the green with the wood.It was a decent amound downwind but Shearer and I looked on with amazement.

The wood gives the pure strikers a significant and well-deserved  advantage.

I guess what it proved was it's the ball and not the club that makes the difference for the best players.

Mike, were there any shots with the wood which Ogilvy did not strike purely?  I'm  interested in how much distance he lost.

Chris,

It was amazing - he barely missed a shot with the wood - a couple were a little high into the wind but if Bob or I missed one we lost 25 yards - as we deserved to considering the quality of the bad swings.
He certainly hit it straighter with the wood.

11 West was in a right to left wind - slightly hurting and Geoff dropped a ball by Bob's drive and ripped a Toney Penna 3 wood  from about 240 yards to about 12 feet.
Shot of the day.

Mark,
Thanks for posting the article.

Mike,
Thanks for conducting an experiment, writing it up, and concluding....."I guess what it proved was it's the ball and not the club that makes the difference for the best players."

Makes you wonder WHY the ruling bodies don't undertake such initiatives to explore the positives in taking what some think is negative action ? Of course, maybe they are, maybe they aren't ? :P

A similar exercise was conducted at Loch Lomond with Gary Orr playing the shots, but in reverse. He was using a rolled back ball if I remember correctly ? Anyway the results were exactly the same. Problem ? What problem ?

Guess I was right all along - there's not much to be scared of in the quest for protecting the sport !
