My congratulation to Mike Devries as well.  I'm looking forward to getting up to Greywalls one of these days.

As far as the List from GM goes I can only say that if Lake of Isles is a Top 10 places to play then Mike had little competition this year.  There is a muni up the road (Shinnecossett) that will cost you about $150 LESS in greens fees and give you far more golfing pleasure.

Dan - IM me or NAF for info before you spend $$ at Lake of Isles

Once again, congratulations to Mike DeVries and his team.  I only hope that he gets the chance soon to do some original work in other parts of the country besides the midwest.

He should be on the short list of anyone looking for an architect to maximize the potential of their land.

Thanks Paul....

I think it's important to point out that this is the Top 10 Courses You Can Play, correct?  By that I mean that private courses are not part of this discussion.

Geoffrey,

Is Lake of The Isles that bad?  I had heard some promising things and thought perhaps Rees would build something more akin to Olde Kinderhook than say...oh...about 150 other of his courses.

What's the scoop?

Mike Cirba-

you are alive!!!!!????????.. Geoff and I only speak of you in the past tense now in hushed tones as if waiting for the prophet Elijah to come to our seder and sit down.

Pass the Matzahball soup.

Noel,

Yes, barely.

I wish that I had been jetsetting and playing a whole bunch of courses like you guys but instead I've been at work for way too many hours (weekends included), trying to re-establish family ties with my daughter, as well as move into a new downsized house two weeks ago that is still uninhabitable due to painters, carpet people, etc., etc.   :P :-\

Who's bitching?  My phone isn't exactly ringing off the hook, either.

Last I recall I invited both of you guys to play somewhere but you couldn't make it.

Noel,

My humor is intact.  I thought my plea for further forbearance or merciful execution was fairly tongue in cheek.  ;D

YES! It is on property whose great beauty would have been better served if it remained a Boy Scout Camp much like Morgan Hill should have remained a Ski resort. The greens are without doubt the dullest set I possibly have ever seen. Elevation changes and wetlands are huge problems too. #11 is a cute par 3.

Just to echo what Paul and others have said / re: Greywalls and Mike DeVries.

First rate course people need to play. It's a trek to get there but once you arrive you will be captivated right from the get-go. The 1st at Greywalls is one of the finest starting holes you can play in public golf in the States.

I know that says alot -- but I stand by it 100%.

I can not think of a better opening hole in all of golf

Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

The first at the Kingsley Club is pretty damn impressive too..  When is Mike going to go global and get out of Michigan??... The Kingsley Club is still the most undervalued course in America to me..

Thanks for the kudos, everyone.   :)

I hadn't heard about this until Joe told me about the thread -- thanks, Grandpa Joe!  Still haven't seen the article!  :o

Look forward to others thoughts after they get there.

Noel,

I have had interest in other projects recently, but nothing to report yet.  I certainly look forward to opportunities in other parts of the country and world and I will let you guys know when it happens.  Grandpa Joe likes sand and sun, is not so well adapted to snow anymore, and I think he might start praying to the Heat Mizer soon!    ;D

Interesting that one and all seem to be congratulating Mike for something that wouldn't occur without course wankuhs.

Food for thought for those other threads?

ps - way to go Mike!  You sure as hell deserve all the accolades one can throw your way.   ;D

Mike-

Someone needs to go build a great public course in Las Vegas.. I just spent a holiday there.. You'd be perfect although I'm not sure how many new courses can be built there.  Nicklaus has just broke ground on a bear trail for the PGA at Coyote Springs (50 miles north of LV).. 6 Jack N. courses going in.. A mini Desert Highlands..
