Design Integrity?
« on: November 15, 2005, 01:06:16 AM »
We hear all the time referrences to maintaining the integrity of a design when talking of course renovation and/or restoration work.

What does this mean?

When proposing plans for an existing golf course when do you cross the unseen line of the architects intent? At Augusta, is it the sacrificing of width or the addition of length that most upsets those of you who are so unhappy with all that's been done there?

At a resort course, even a "Golden Age" original, is there a comprimise between the architects design integrity and what might make the most sense for the facility?

When I read what William Flynn wrote about the holes on a golf course, it doesn't seem like a course many 'part-timers' these days would enjoy because of the sheer length required. Do you add tee boxes? Or at least make sure there are several options on each hole?

Jim,

You can't sleep due to the collapse by the Eagles, right?  Ugh, that was one fugly loss.  Looks like Donovan may be done for the season.  The Eagles sure are.

M,

I didn't think so at the time, but you sure are right.  Donovan should have confronted him then and there and had it out instead of letting it fester.  The team didn't stand up to Owens at all, it was crazily done by the retired Hugh Douglas.

Andy Reid can't coach a game.  His calls are baffling, especially 2 and 7 when he calls a convert play to a rookie in the fourth quarter with the lead and 4 minutes to go.  The odd thing is the rookie converted the route based on the defense and Donovan did not.  They were running the ball so well and he stopped it cold.  Ugh.  Almost as bad as the prevent defense they called--it stopped the momentum.  Seems like the Eagles prevent defense prevents them from winning.

You may've hijacked it quickly, but your powers of perception prove on target again....alot of head scratching in the front offices today I guess.

I was thinking of your work at The Homestead with this, did you guys go straight off Flynn's work? What adjustments did you make for length? Width? Maintenance practices such as green speeds and fairway cut height?
