Atlanta Country Club - Photos
« on: August 28, 2005, 08:47:53 PM »
I've added photographs of Atlanta Country Club to my website this evening:

http://www.golfarch.com/ACC/

This is the former home of the Atlanta Golf Classic/Georgia-Pacific Atlanta Golf Classic/BellSouth Classic.  (TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth is the new home of the BellSouth Classic.)  It's an on-again, off-again Top 100 course.

Willard Byrd designed it in 1964.  Nicklaus, Cupp, and Michael Riley have each made significant modifications to the course throughout the years.

This is NOT Atlanta Athletic Club--a course in Duluth that has since hosted the U.S. Open and PGA Championship.

Here are some teasers:

Hole 6, Par 3

Hole 10, Par 4

Hole 13, Par 3

Hole 13, Par 3

Hole 18, Par 5 (reachable)

Hole 18, Par 5 (reachable)

Carlyle,

Looks to me like they could use some streambank stabilization work on the par 3, 6th hole.  The bank appears to be giving way and the flood waters will soon be chewing on the edge of the green.

Carlyle, is the 18th very similar to the 18th at Atlanta Athletic Club where Jerry Pate stuck the 5 iron to win the US Open?

At first glance the main difference I see is that this 18th at ACC looks (From the pictures as I have not played ACC) much more narrow with the heavy trees encroaching on the right hand side.  The 18th at AAC (Highlands) plays parallel to the 18th of the Riverside course there, and is seperated mostly by a large series of mounding.  There is heavy rough but it is still a much more open feel from the tee than what it appears from the photos of ACC here.  Pate's ball I believe was in that rough on the right hand side of the hole.   He would have been in the woods at ACC based on what I see from the pictures of ACC's 18th

That's on the radar.  We've lost a lot of bank in the last four years.

I haven't played Atlanta Athletic Club in probably twenty years.  I can't recall any longer.

When we hosted a PGA Tour event, this was generally regarded as one of the best finishing holes on tour.

Bill;

The 18th at Atlanta CC is not very similar to the 18th at Atlanta Athletic Club where Pate holed his shot......ACC is a better hole!!!

I have never played Atlanta Country Club, but was a spectator for two or three Atlanta Golf Classics in the '70's.  It is a beautiful course that I can only feel is grossly underrated.  Why, I don't know!  Maybe the greens are average as compared to the other top 100.  Anyone care to comment on the putting surfaces.

Right now, absolutely the Best Greens in Atlanta........PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!! The Medalist Company did a fantastic job regrassing/rebuilding these surfaces a couple of years back. With all the difficulty in this region this summer, heavy rains in July and the extreme heat in August, many clubs are either shut down, have drastically limited play, in some cases eliminating guest play, or in terrible shape and struggling to keep from loosing their respective putting surfaces. Fungus is a "spreading problem" in this region right now........but not ACC........They are perfect!!!!

I'll be there Friday!!!

McC, I haven't played either, they just look like the same hole from what I've seen in these photos and on TV.  Par 5, water in front, all carry on to the green.  ACC #18 looks exactly like the AAC #18 where David Toms laid up and beat Phil Mickelsen.

What are the differences, and why is ACC #18 a better hole?

(Sorry to put you on the spot here!)  ???

I loved #13.

Bill;

ACC is a tough dogleg left with "Very Tall" (now they are)trees on the corner, whereas AAC is basically straight forward from the tee.....ACC is shorter for a par 5 and a true risk reward......AAC is a par 5 that played as a par 4 when Pate holed his shot but is a "longer" par 5 on a normal member round than ACC....

ACC has "OB" along the right.......tightening the drive area and forcing balls closer to the water, whereas AAC has trees and water left, but nothing really tightening the landing area other than a right fairway bunker at about 270 off the tee...

ACC #18 has a green with several tiers and tightly mowed surrounds - a couple of nice bunkers front and long left, is surrounded by old trees and has area short of the green, by the lake, where your approach shot could come up short and still be dry (I emphasize could) and there is a bail out area to the right......whereas AAC #18 has a relatively benign green, only slightly sloped back to front, it also has that "Rees Jones" look.......is surrounded by a stone wall on the front and both sides, thus, no chance of a ball short having a chance to hang up on the bank (not an option), it is also void of any trees except at the far right and I am not even sure if it has a bunker after the redo, I just don't remember that feature, and there is no bailout area if you go for the green in two...

ACC sits in a "natural" stadium like setting.......AAC has nothing behind it except the putting green, cart path, and the clubhouse (which is nice by the way)

Hope this helps......

Thanks, appreciate the explanation.  It certainly does sound like ACC has the better hole.

Not a problem, your description of each hole tells the story.  Thanks!
