Mike,

You must be a speed reader!  And you survived a day of reading this stuff, without pictures?  Wow!

This is, after all, only the first draft.  I would think there's a lot of tuning needed; not just the fine variety.  Some of the newer stuff is a bit better but I feel there is no style to the writing and it is all too dry.  Oh well, with your help and others---calling Tom Paul--it can improve greatly.  Oh, and I know you can visualize how the drawings, ground photos and Craig's aerials will enhance the effect.

After I finish the important chapter on Huntingdon Valley I will send the latest version to you.  We shall discuss at Lancaster sometime soon.  Well, back to writing....

Wayne,

Here is the picture of the 10th at SCC as promised. This was taken from the forward tee. The rest of the tees are back and to the right of the shot. They also sit about twenty feet lower and the shot is coming out of a chute caused by some trees and the terrain.

The green falls away steeply from the greenside bunker and also over the back. The ideal line is close to the fairway bunkers on the right (the fairway used to be cut right up to them, it's slowly being mowed back down there).

Too bad we can't see it tomorrow.  Oh well, soon enough, I hope.  That's a lot of rough between the fairway and the bunkers on the right.

Yes, it is a lot, and that's indicative of what's been happening to the place. If the fairway were brought down and somewhat around those bunkers, and those trees removed, you'd bring more of the hole in play and also more of the OB that's just off the picture.

I know I keep saying it, just guess we keep missing each other... but anytime with a few days notice is possible. This weekend is good.

Wayne:

The most effecitive collection of front to back sloping greens in a strategic sense I've ever seen are on Oakmont---#1, #10 and #12.

But I'm not sure why you mentioned PCC's #3 in the initial post---that's not a front to back sloping green.

Tom,

I'll take a look at Oakmont's collection of front to back greens on a western swing sometime this summer.

I think the 3rd green (former 18th) at Philadelphia Country does generally flow slightly front to back.  Even lofted 3rd shots roll to the back some but especiallylonger irons where it is hard to hold the green.  I may be wrong though...maybe it is more level.  I'll ask  Mike McNulty and see what he thinks.
