I had the chance to get down to Pinehurst for yesterday's
practice-round and thought I would share a few pictures and
comments on the overall experience:

1) Having been to a few US Opens (Shinnecock, Oakland Hills)
and The Masters, I believe that the overall setup is as good as
any tournament I've seen...including The Masters.  Parking was
easy (out in a large field in Carthage), busing was efficient
(waited no more than 5 minutes either way), and getting around
the course was very efficient.  Granted it was a Monday, but I
was carrying a 4 month old and never felt cramped, pushed or
hurried.  Lines were managed very quickly and efficiently
throughout the facilities.

2) While the mandatory "merchandise village" was in place and
hocking anything and everything with a USOpen logo, I was
somewhat taken back by all the commercialism of "tributes to
Payne Stewart".  These were some of the most expensive items
and I wonder how much they intend to give to the Stewart
family or their chosen charities......ok, enough of the
negativity....

3) The 18th hole on course #4 is now a walkway from the
parking-lot to the 18th green (course entrance), the 18th green
on #1 is the short-game practice area and #1 hole on #1 course
is the practice range.  Maniac Hill is now the corporate tent
village.  Apparently Maniac Hill will also be rebuilt & lengthened
after the tournament is complete.

4) I thought the course looked great and it should prove to be
an excellent test this week.  The initial weather forecasts were
showing rain all week, but that now looks like it's been pushed
until the weekend (if at all).  The rough appears to have come in
very nicely and the "rough areas" around the green appear to
not be too bad (see pictures below).

5) The primary rough is about 3-4" deep and balls go right to the
bottom of it.  It's not terribly thick, but will definitiely effect
control of approach shots.  The rough outside the ropes is
probably 5-6" deep.

6) The greens are already firm ("thud" sound) but will hold good
approaches....rolling off the slopes is a different story ;).  The
surrounds are mowed short, but not green height.  This seemed
to create a really good challenge for players, as putting is tough
to judge speed and there is enough grass to encourage different
types of chipping....but balls will stop in the grass (and roll back)
if not hit well.

Daddy and Leah attend their first (of hopefully many) US Opens
together.  To those that ask if you should bring a child to a
tournament, I say "where is the harm?".  Not appropriate for a
tournament day, but a fun outing during a practice round.

Looking towards the 18th green from the crosswalk.

Looking back at the 18th fairway towards the tee.  Most fairways were 25-26yds wide, but they didn't "appear" terribly narrow.

Who do you think will be at the top of this come Sunday?

Brian:

Thanks for posting the pictures - glad to hear you and Leah had a nice day.

The question I have been pondering is what would be considered a successful course setup for this event?  Personally I just want to see different clubs used around the greens.  I was a bit concerned when I read that most of the pros were using putters only from the chipping areas due to the inconsistency in the damaged turf...I hope that does not prove to be the case during the event as it will definitely affect the viewing enjoyment.  Unlike Shinnecock I don't think firm and fast on the fairway is so important here, since with few exceptions the fairways have relatively little contour.  On the holes with lots of fairway contour, such as #5, I hope that balls will hang on the slope rather than all run down to the low side.

A few more pics:

From the bleechers behind the 16th green:

A bunker about 100-125yds short of the 16th green.  Notice how thick and fluffy the "love grass" has gotten around the bunker.  This was seen on several holes.

Several pictures of #15 green.  I sat here for about 45 minutes and watched players attempt recoveries from all angles....what an excellent and underappreciated hole (along with #6 and #9)

The typical sandy-area + wire-grass that you see at Pinehurst #2 (along hole #3, #11, #12).  This is from #11 fairway.

Another bunker edged by long "love grass", this one on #14.

A decent picture showing the contours within and around the greens at Pinehurst #2.

Cory

Brian, awesome pictures.  Did you have any trouble getting your practice round tickets?

Brian_Gracely

Cory,

I got the practice round tickets through the USGA.  They had a website setup for several months after the tournament tickets had been distributed.  Also, there were a bunch of people selling practice-round and tournament tickets in the parking lots...mostly at face value or small mark-ups.  So it's definitely feasible to get a ticket if you wanted to attend.

Did Bill "bucket hat" McBride send Princess Leah one of his hats? ;) ;D

Who has that Carthage parking fee concession?  Will it go towards a Carthage Club development? 8) ;D

No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

For all it's rich history and grandeur and as a top notch course and resort, this view walking up 18 is very disappointing and tacky.

The fairways seem tighter than in 1999. Does anyone else share that opinion?

If that's truly the case, somewhat disappointed. Seems like the rough takes away more, varied angles to the greens.

Back in 1999, the shorter rough and wider fairways didn't seem to detract from the challenge #2 presented.

Brian_Gracely

Chip,

The USGA has stated that they are about 4-5yds more narrow than in 1999.  Just from looking at a few of the holes (I didn't walk the whole course), it appears they provided less fairway on the less-strategic side of some fairways (ie. more fairway available to the left-side of #2 hole, near the fairway bunkers, which provides a better angle to the angled green).

Mike B,

Good point, I'm surprised that they have had a face-lift the the meber's portion of the clubhouse.  Especially considering how nice the other side is.
