"Nicklaus: Artistry on the Links"" on TGC
« on: June 01, 2005, 09:48:37 AM »
I missed this last night:

During the Opening Session at the 2005 GCSAA Education Conference in Orlando, golf legend and Old Tom Morris Award winner Jack Nicklaus sat down with The Golf Channel's Adam Barr for a taped one-on-one interview.

If you missed it, the interview will premier during the feature "Jack Nicklaus: Artistry on the Links," which will air on The Golf Channel May 31 at 7:30 p.m. EST, the week of The Memorial Tournament. Replays are scheduled June 1 (1 a.m. and 2 p.m.), June 2 (5 a.m.), June 3 (4 a.m.) and June 6 (12:30 p.m.).

I watched it last night. A couple of JN's comments:

- Oakmont has the fastest greens anyone had ever seen in '62. They blew people's minds. He thought they stimped at 7 or 7.5. :o

- Fairways today are cut at levels that greens were cut to in the 60's. JN sounded like he wanted to go to higher fairway cuts.

- Loves ANGC for its wide landing areas contrasting with greens that require entry from specific angles. (He made a confusing reference to Ross as the designer and then mentioned Jones and MacK.)

- Wants bunkers to be left unraked. Praised Oakmont's furrowed bunkers.

- Thinks all his designs are joint efforts and does not believe design attributions accurately reflect th team work involved.

- Difference in his courses over the years are largely the result of the the different teams that worked on them.

- The ball, not equipment, is the cause of the distance problem.

- People can now hit the ball so straight and so long that narrowing of landing areas now makes sense.

Maybe others will recall other things he said.

Bob,

You definitely covered the highlights. I didn't find it that revealing........nothing against Adam Barr (the moderator), but another host might have pried more nuggets out of Jack.
