Quiz #2 to continue your day (also based on TCG)
« on: April 19, 2005, 10:14:29 AM »
Paul Thomas did the quiz based on the ! hole ratings from the Gourmet's Choice courses.  I have another one for you (based completely on memory - may be off by one).  Please no research!   ;D

In Doak's hole ratings for Pinehurst #2, a whopping 16 holes have a ! and all are only one !, none received !!.

Which two holes did not receive a ! ?

Even if you can't remember, you could guess based on which 2 holes you think (or you think Doak would think) are inferior to the other 16.

#4 is one.

Personally, I think #3 is one of the best holes on the course.   ;)

I was going to say #4 also, and then I draw a blank on that course from 12-14, so I will say one of those.

But, is Doak considering a 16 a par-5 in the book? It may be that hole.

The Confidential Guide was published in 1996, before the 1999 U.S. Open, so he likely considered #8 and #16 the par 5's they normally are.

Not #12-14.  I consider #14 to be perhaps the best hole on the course.

Bingo.

I find the green on #7 to be very good.

I think it's 7 - I was re-reading his evaluation a few weeks ago. If I'm right, did I cheat?

And Doak's rating came before land was cleared for the large house on the left side of the fairway.

Cheating is looking at it once you see the quiz posted.  I can see you guessed correctly ("crossed paths in cyberspace")before I revealed it.  So you get credit, too.   ;)

Scott,
I agree with you about the green. It's a very difficult approach unless your drive is in the fairway level with the bunker at the turn in the dogleg. I think the hole is much better than 8
