No cheating. Who remembers (other than me) what kind of hat Gary Player wore in his 1974 masters victory?

A beanie?

By which I mean, more formally: A tam-o'-shanter.

I'll clarify, it was a regular ball cap. The question is what logo?

Arnie wore a baseball cap at the '58 Masters. See www.masters.org/en_US/history/results/1958.html

Check out Jimmy Demaret, in 1950, at www.masters.org/en_US/history/results/1950.html

In the pantheon of American contributions and innovations to the game of golf the baseball cap needs to rank very high.

I was 14 years old in 1974 but didn't watch golf. I just have an image in my head of Gary Player at the Masters with a some sort of logo on a white baseball cap.

You are youthful in appearance, and your recollection is good.

Very interesting . . . Scott Burroughs, please note that nowhere did I suggest that pros not wear hats or Joe Sixpack abstain from baseball hats and shorts.

Sweeney will confirm that I am blessed with flowing chestnut locks . . . it would be a shame to hide them away . . .

I think the most anachronistic gear from 1929 would be the ties . . .  no thanks. . .

I think Player was on the cover of SI for that Masters win...I can't remember which logo...was it Ram (golf)?

That's odd.

The Masters' official site (http://www.masters.org/en_US/history/results/1974.html) shows Player in a "Hogan hat."

Yes, and I must have misread it as a condemnation of hats and shorts as a violation of tradition in golf in general.

We don't need Sweeney to confirm that, your head shot was beside your name for some time, not to mention those Bald Peak pics the day of your ace.  Seems like more of a reason to wear a hat, the darker the color, the more heat it absorbs, unless it's so shiny and flowing that it completely reflects all heat energy.

Maybe we can do this like the KP-IV topic and jack it into a thread about who has the best hair. Of people I've seen lately, Huckaby and Duran each have awfully full heads of hair for males of their (our) age.

Those of us who don't even have "locks" at all, much less flowing, much less chestnut, find it somewhat incomprehensible to make it to 40 without needing a hat of some kind to simply cover bare skin.

Brent,

Dan King has a lot of hair, but I think Dan Kelly gets the award based on age, "fullness" of head of hair (I guess in female terms, that's called "body"), and length.  And I think he's proud of it.

The Sam Malone of GCA -- analyzed online by guys I've never met!

What a world!

Proud of it? No. (It's all in the genes, man. Got no right to be proud of those!)

Grateful for it? You bet your life!

(Oh, and by the way, Scott: Right now, it's pretty short -- albeit, as usual, bustin' with body! You know how it is: It grows. You cut it. It grows again. You cut it. How cool is that?)

You know what I'm proud of? I'm proud of my 13-year-old daughter -- whose hair is even thicker than mine, and considerably prettier.

But I'm not proud of her hair; I'm proud of the fact that she shot a 98 yesterday, in her first 18-hole Varsity match (her first 18-hole round on a "championship" course, as it happens), after starting out as nervous as a cat in a room full of rockers. Won her letter, finishing fourth on the team.

How cool is THAT?

In a sincere historio-sartorial inquiry I ask - when did professional golfers start wearing headgear that is more suited to baseball players or interstate truckers?

My question is (as a purist  ;)), when did they stop taking their hats off when giving an interview on TV?

Can the NASCAR sponsors really get their money's worth from a bumper sticker sized logo on the side of one of those cars? Absolutely the most impressive display of marketing I have seen. How many logos are standard on a car?

trying to think of some other hat trivia, I thought of this one:  maybe the worst hat logo worn by a major champion:  Lee Janzen wore a Sharps (non alcoholic) beer hat at Baltusrol

also, Ray Floyd for SBC/some phone company at historic Shinnecock
