Aerial of the Day #47 - Updated (and big)
« on: April 18, 2005, 11:02:35 AM »
I'm not shrinking this one, it's too sharp and beautiful as is....

The home of the White Comb and Washboard bunkers?

Obviously taken before the last of the remaining internal trees
were taken out by 'Thunder' and 'Lightning'.

FYI, I showed Studer this a couple of years ago....

Taken before early 2003 as the new bridge over the turnpike wasn't built yet.  At this point every tree that is between holes is gone except for a couple between 18 green and 10 tee and probably quite a few around the edges.

Yes, the new bridge can be seen under construction in
Google's aerial, although the remaining internal trees hadn't
been taken out yet in that one.  I still liked this pic better -
nice and sharp.

Does this photo show all of the new back tees that were constructed for the 2003 US Amateur?

This is a truly wonderful photo!

Here at Turnpike CC, I guess the additional bridge they are
building is for the crowds when the The Big Show comes in
2007 (and the Women's Big Show in 2010).

I can only imagine what USGA greens speeds will be like on these greens....

Here's a shot (taken Sept 9, 2002) where you can see the
new bridge under construction (wait a few seconds):

Supposedly, the medalist in 2003 was +14; you could see your reflection in those greens.

Do we really need to guess at this one?

Come on guys... I lived there for two years of my life!

Is that a movable obstruction on one???

:-D

Great work Scott, you beat me to this one.

Peter, I believe all the tees that were build for the US Amateur are shown on this picture.
But, there are a few new ones built at the end of last year.
#3 has a new one that is further back and actually on property that is part of Oakmont East in this picture.
#8 supposedly has a new tee also.  Not sure of others.
#2 has a new cross bunker that is about where the trees that
cast shadows over the fairway short of the green are located.

By the way the hole that is furthest to the right (east) is acutally
the first hole on Oakmont East, a public course owned by Oakmont.
Its main claim to fame is as a parking lot for the US Open.

Great shot Scott.  Interesting to  note the differences between the new "treeless" layout and what is depicted in my version of the World Atlas of Golf (circa 1988). Also see that there are some bunker changes throughout.

It's not too hard to recognize #3 Oakmont with those church pew bunkers!  The hole to the right doesn't have much of the same bunkering!

Man that is a huge clubhouse facility!  They won't need any extra parking when they host the open...  Is it me or are the buildings and parking area unusually large?
