Also, congrats to fellow Northwestern alum, Luke Donald, who finished T3.

Except for a really awful morning yesterday (played the last 16 holes of round two in 6-over-par), Luke woulda been right in it at the end.

Either way, this young man is gonna be a force on Tour for years to come!

Cheers!!!

dave,

i think don was just referring to the collarless shirt tiger wore.

that was some spectacular play by both chris and tiger. dimarco surely is a fighter.

once again the masters shows why it is the best major, even with -12 being the winning score, take note USGA ;)

Chris - I sure noticed and I bet the media did as well.  They are all such competitors that it must be hard to have parallel personal relationships - ie - be friends!

Jonathan, its no secret that they don't see eye to eye, but how difficult is it to turn around and shake the guy's hand, as occurs every year?

Re the collarless t-shirt.

My recollection is that this is merely a return of the fashion from the early 1970's.  My recollection was that this was a common look for many players.  Going on memory, I think I can remember players like Gary Player, Dave Marr and perhaps even Jack Nicklaus wearing that look.  (My apologies if I have got any of these wrong).

Who knows - bright, plaid trousers might return to fashion soon, or flaired bell-bottom pants, or floral pastels ;D

Hey Chris - I'm not agruing with you!  You are quite right, it honors the traditions to be polite, respective and acknowledge your competitors.

But they are all such race horses that it must be hard to turn down the volume on that inner voice.  It's so loud under those circumstances that it's probably hard to be aware of much else.

Tiger will have to explain himself about ignoring Phil at some point.  And Phil will need to be quoted saying, "Aw shucks, you guys in the media blow it way out of proportion".

Yeah right Phil, Tiger thinks you're a big FU and that's that!

Chris Dimarco joins the long list of players who have really pushed Tiger in a major. Let's see now, it's Bob May AND Chris Dimarco. Whew, what a list. Well I suppose Rich Beem and some others didn't do too badly either but ya get the picture.

Worst call of the day. Attempt at understatement when Tiger chipped in at 16. After a short silence to let events speak for themselves - paraphrasing, "this guy's not a bad player." Oh boy was that lame.

Also, meet the new cliches, same as the old cliches ( mostly abused by Lanny) "and he has left himself with a ~very~ difficult chip from over there". Usually followed by the player chipping to a foot, or in the case of Tiger, chipping in.

Yeah, that snub to Phil in the green jacket ceremony wasn't classy at all, though I was pretty amazed at the emotion he showed - welling up when Nantz talked about his dad.

Overall, a great round, and yes DiMarco played his heart out - but he should made that putt on 13!  What irons he hit.  He did feel like Bob May.

Tiger leaked oil, but really put it back in place on 18 in the playoff...  It was also great to see the big upper cuts and the emotion on 16 and 18...  He really wanted this, and there was a ton of pressure...

And yes, Lanny is not great.  At the beginning of the round, he's all but calling it over - which it wasn't.  And then later he's criticizing Tiger for being in cruise control -- umm, how many majors did Lanny win again?  Cruise control is Tiger's MO...

I don't think it's possible to be a "force" on the PGA Tour if you are a medium distance driver. Win tournaments? Yes. Dominate? No. Weir illustrates this point. He's simply not an upper tier golfer, and likely never will be. Donald could be another Weir. Adam Scott is a more believable future superstar.

My recollection is that Jim Nantz through a bit of curveball to Tiger: Dedicating the win to his father, who -- from the tone of Tiger's answer -- is knocking on death's door. Tiger clearly got choked up, and in the setting of having just one the most important tournament in golf and having to reflect on your dying father you, too, might forget to shake Phil's hand.

Just saw the highlights of the outside ceremony, and Tiger did turn around and made sure to shake Phil's hand...

I realize this is such an important topic :)

Wow, Tiger has turned into Phil Mickelson.  Plays half heartedly for a while, then has a hot streak that puts him out in front, then slowly chokes it away down the stretch.  Its only because DiMarco couldn't buy a putt all afternoon that Tiger won.  If he'd got just one to drop the entire afternoon, Tiger would have had to think about giving away a major with a four shot lead.

When's the last time someone won at Augusta while going over par on the back nine on Sunday?  That's gotta be a long time, and maybe never in conditions as perfect as they were today.  That's got to weigh on the confidence of a guy like Tiger.  When the pressure was on, his new swing definitely did NOT hold up.

When he holed that chip on #16 was anyone else reminded of Watson on #17 PB in '82?
My hovercraft is full of eels.

I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this, but I never remember a Sunday Masters broadcast which focused so completely on two players.  Seems to me DiMarco and Woods were on the screen 75% of the time.  Of course these were the two players in contention to win, but I was really surprised how few players were featured on the show.  One of the only drawbacks of today's telecast.

If you don't watch the green jacket ceremony on the masters.org you'll miss a great moment by Hootie Johnson.

At the start of the ceremony, some yahoo is shouting out various things to Phil and Tiger.  Random comment about the US Open, whatever, making a big boor of himself and you can hear it on the video.

After the second time he does it while Hootie is talking, Hootie says in the coolest southern way "We might get ridda you..."  Cheers from the audience and the guy shuts up.

Gotta love it.

Chris,

Great spot...

I have logged in today to make the same point, but you have beaten me too it...  that was a blatant snub of Mickelson in the cabin.

Even funnier was when Hootie aske Phil to present the jacket and he said sarcastically " it would be my pleasure " which came across badly on our tv anyway?

Woods didnt even acknowledge him as you said...

Who says these guys aren't competitive.. no wonder why you guys have had recent disapointment in the R.C with players that cant stand one another.

John Kirk -

I also noticed that about the coverage. It was incredible the extent to which the coverage just focused Woods/DiMarco - sometimes for 6-8 minutes at a stretch, with little going on.

To take just one example: Retief Goosen shot four birdies, 32 shots, coming in, to finish third, and I think we saw a total of one tee shot and one putt.

I suppose if you were a Rod Pampling/Mark Hensby fan you would be feeling even more sore! I don't think I saw Pampling hit a shot, and he finished fifth!

Still - I take my hat off to DiMarco. I have never particularly liked him, but he played wonderfully well. Tiger reminded us why he remains a great player, but I think DiMarco's performance was the more instructive because it confirms what has changed since 2000 - the other guys now believe they can haul him in and beat him when he leads (and so do I).

If you are watching a horse race do you want to watch the horses with a chance of winning, or do you want the TV cameras to spend precious time on the two plugs battling for 16th place on their way to the glue factory?

BTW, best line (BBC Version) was Peter Allis as Eldrick hacked his way up the 17th, to the effect of:

"Well, Tiger seems to be doing his best to give DiMarco some encouragement..."

Rich,

Yes...

But two shots for Retief (apparently one of the new inductees into the 'Big 4', soon to be 'Big5') was little coverage for some good play from a good player.

I am a large Tiger Fan and enjoyed the coverage of him, so I was not complaining, but after the 2nd hole for the remaining holes on the front nine, little was exciting until the usual 11th hole dramatics and onwards.

James - yes, he did win, but he was hanging on, outplayed by DiMarco. A few years ago he would have won going away from the field.

Rich - I'm not sure the racing analogy works. With a race, it is clearly not practical to focus on the also rans. But we were watching the TV last night for 4.5 hours! There was plenty of time to look at the others. Watching Tiger stalk a putt for three minutes is not very compelling! :)

It was a two-man tournament.  Who cares about the guys who finish 7 shots behind?

And has anyone heard from DiMarco about why he laid up on 15?  It must have been mud, right?

In contrast, before Tiger hit his 2nd on 15, the cameras caught him test-addressing the ball, backing off, and shaking his head.  He clearly had a bad lie, or some mud.  And then he stuffed it.

DiMarco said he laid up because he was on a downhill lie and had either a 3 wood or a 2 iron in...he felt that if he crushed a 2 iron and reached the green there would be no way the ball stays on, and laying up to 85 yards, perfect L wedge distance, was a better play.  Very similar to David Toms in the PGA at Atlanta a couple years ago.  And he was right, he laid up, stuffed a wedge, and made birdie, just like Toms.  So, it's hard to criticize a guy for knowing his game and the shot at hand and making a good decision.  In fact, after all these years, I think it's time that people give Chip Beck the benefit of the doubt for his famous lay-up at 15...the players know their own games and the demands of the shot better than the pundits in the booth or the fans at home.
